P42-M Mega Lotto winner buys ticket instead of kids' snacks

LAOAG CITY, Philippines – On an errand from his wife who gave him P20 to buy snacks for their twin kids, one of the winners of the recent P42-million Mega Lotto draw used the money to place a bet instead.

His wife berated him when he came home empty handed save for the lotto ticket safely tucked in his pocket.

A day later, the risk he took bore fruit when he learned that he won the top prize, which he split with another winner from Sta. Cruz, Laguna. The winner’s father said his son used the birth dates of his twins, his wife and his own for the draw. He said that his son had been betting these numbers in the lotto for almost a year but would only get minor prizes on a few occasions.

The father, a former policeman from Batac town, asked not to be identified for security reasons. The winner is from this city, working as a merchandiser of grocery items.

His father disclosed that before his son won, he was telling his parents-in-law that he would replace their house with a new one.
He said that his son would save money even if it meant skipping meals and snacks while at work and use the little savings to bet on lotto.

One of his kids is suffering from an illness that needs extensive medical intervention, according to the winner’s father.

It was learned that his P21-million winnings, representing half of the prize, is still in the bank while the winner and his wife are consulting with family members on how to spend the winnings. – With Charlie Lagasca

No winner of P277-M lotto jackpot

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) declared no winner for Monday night's 6/55 Grand Lotto draw.

Bettors missed the 11-31-53-14-45-06 winning combination, which would have guaranteed them a share in the P277 million jackpot prize.

A nationwide frenzy is already building up for the jackpot as ticket sales soared from the average of P25 million per draw to P113 million.

This is the first time this year that the jackpot of the grand lotto game breached P250 million.

The biggest Grand Lotto jackpot was P741 million, which a balikbayan from New York won with the winning ticket he bought in Olongapo City in November 2010.
