i don't get what the big deal is. the Church has been one of the richest organizations in recorded history, and they have been so for centuries.

they do a lot of good with that money, but they also use it to accumulate land, treasures of religious significance, and build the most elaborate and ostentatious churches. the RCC has enough money to buy every priest a Rolls Royce if they so wanted.

personally, i don't have a problem with a parish priest allowing himself some comforts in life as long as their parish has adequate funding for charitable works, etc.

I agree with you, dude. Certain comforts are fine, but certainly not luxuries. It would defeat the purpose of the Church in asking for donations.

the_wildthing:I don't think all orders have vows of poverty anyway.
ganun ba un? medyo mahina po ako sa mga ganyang topic, pero pagkakaalam ko, all priests, regardless of order, have to take these 3 vows. vows of poverty, celibacy, and something...

There are also another type called diocesan priest that only take a vow of celebacy and obedience.

It is the choice of the person to be either a religious (3 vows) or diocesan (2 vows) depending on what they think God wants them to be.

Teka ha. I will ask around and confirm when I get the chance. Kasi yung family friend priest namin actually owns a car. He bought it after he got ordained. He's in the US. Iba yata pag diocesan vs. religious or something...

    OTO,
on Christ on donkey: ah ganun ba? I was taught in Sunday school that the donkey, at that time, was the lowliest of animals. i must have been going to the wrong Sunday school.

point ko lang naman for priests: necessities, dapat. comforts, baka pwede na rin. luxuries, i object!

is a fancy expensive car a luxury? this might be subjective, pero sa akin YES.

    yun lang.

Maybe you were absent when they discussed the significance of the donkey.

If you object to the priest having "luxuries" then dont donate. The Three Wise Men/Kings gave the baby Jesus gifts fit for a King and I have no doubt Mama Mary and St Joseph used it gratefully.

No offense but it appears that people are envious of priests for the wrong reason. Bakit ganito at ganyan merong ganito. Dapat ganito at ganyan at ganito gamit niya. So long as the property given them are used towards fulfillment of there duties as priests then I dont see no problem.

I heard the Roman Catholic Church has a stake in BPI. I could be wrong though.

Yup it is common for churches to have placements in certain banks since it is the one of the most conservative ways to invest the money should it not be needed yet.

What boggles the mind more is that of the bank accounts of some "Religious Groups" and their officers (and what they are trying to do under the table). The bank i work for once turned down such a group, even if it meant big CASA deposits as its not worth the risk, and the setting aside of ethics.

Would you happen to know what he drives? Was this erring priest reported to his superiors?

    OTO,

sorry sir, but i take offense, because that is not the case in my case. i dont envy priests, or anyone for that matter if they have a fancy car. in fact, i wouldnt give a flying frig one way or the other. i was taught and raised to live and be content with the simple life, basta sa marangal na paraan nakuha. im sure i am not alone on this.

but in this case, at eto lang naman ang sa akin, priests using luxurious vehicles leaves a bad taste in my mouth and only magnifies the hypocrisy that characterizes the modern day Catholic Church.

its not the image of priest i had when i was growing up and it certainly does not fit the image of priests that i have today.

Btw, i think i will stick to my donkey analogy, if you dont mind. if you still disagree in this respect, whatever suits you na po sir.

    peace.

so how about you? are you not a hypocrite by saying priest should not have luxuries while at the same time allowing some for yourself? do not tell me you do not enjoy luxuries, no matter how small they may be?

sabi na nga kasi, punasan mo muna uling sa mukha mo bago mo punahin ang uling sa mukha ng iba.

back in my younger days i had a very closed adherence to anything concerning our lowly town parish priest..irish sya and stayed for no less than 10years then another irish came..typical of a rural setting fr cullen hanged on spreading the words of God..either he trekked some far flung barrios or mount his imported "mula" horse reaching his faithful subjects..

pero those were the days..very very sepia-colored & long gone childhood days...

fast forward at present times..ibang iba na..pinoy na ang pari samin at meron narin syang segunda manong jeep surviving wear & tear thru voluntary repair & maintenance services from better off parishioners..

those generation of mulahs have just seen their days and were auctioned somewhere when fr cullen and his successors had to end their missions going home for good to their country of origin..

just sharing memories of my beloved hometown..

father shay cullen ba yan? ang alam ko nasa pinas pa siya, pero retired na.

may kilala akong 2 retired na irish priests. di naman sila umuuwi pag retired na eh, they stay where they served (usually may retirement home and order nila). kasi naman wala na din silang family na uuwian. just imagine leaving home when they were in their mid 20's and only going home for vacation once or twice. then mababalitaan na lang nila dedo na parents nila and other members of their family. they did not even had the chance of taking care of their parents when they were old. tapos pag sila naman na ang matanda wala na din magaalaga sa kanila at patay na din lahat ng family nila. kahit may brothers and sisters pa they will be too old na din, and they will not want to be a burden to their family. so masakit man at sad, they stay in their order's retirement houses.

tapos magkaron lang ng pajero dami na pumupuna!

could be nasa monastery nalang sila..cant remember na kung shay ba..but judging from my age now and the gap between us he must be about in his 80s na...i heard rumours years back parang he passed away narin daw...sa probinsya kasi doesnt matter much as long na pari sya, well liked and respected..pader koling o kolim or something pa nga tawag ng iba..basta siya na 'yon..paring merkano kuno..hehrherher..

tama me isa pa si father cavanagh..at isa pang irish din..altar boy kasi ako non..time when priest had to turn his back to his faithful 90% of the time during mass rites..

    yebo,

i answered this already, but for your benefit, i will repeat it. i didn't take the priestly vows, they did. at sa palagay ko lang and if i remember right, kasama dun yung renounciation of all wordly things. feel free to correct me if i am wrong. so sa palagay ko lang kasama dun ang mga luxuries. choice nila yun at may kaakibat yun ng mga bagay. just like may mga kaakibat din ang mga choices natin dito in this world.

akala ko ba walang personalan dito? o since we are getting to be personal here, i'll go with that. i once thought i had the vocation, pero God had other plans pala for me. during that time, na-form na yung image ko ng mga priest. i worked with them closely and it was clear to me their lives are devoted only to service. this is what they tried to impart to us and it was not getting a luxurious vehicle.

after i left, I tried and still try to be a good member of the Church. try ha, because i don't succeed all the time. but i am thankful i still got some small blessings despite the numerous occassions i made mistakes. syempre dala-dala ko pa rin ang image ko ng mga pari, and priests who ride luxurious vehicles just doesn't cut it for me.

im not trying to be high and mighty here, pointing the finger at this and that and whoever. i just call it like i see it. there was a topic, i expressed my views and try engage in a lively and friendly debate about the topic without hopefully offending and being personal with anyone. hopefully being the operative word. i know that in the end, its all everybody's choice and opinion.

as i said, i enjoy the simple life and have very few possessions i consider luxuries. i look at them more as BLESSINGS than luxuries. the car i bought for myself, i don't even consider luxurious, not by any stretch of the imagination. i bought that with my own blood sweat and tears. and i use it for my work, just like the priests. but i give thanks nonetheless for the blessing and serve my church my own little way. also, i give to my Church within my means.

so if you still insist on engaging in name-calling here and think i am a hypocrite, hey, whatever scratches your itch man. i ain't perfect, and i never pretended to be. and i don't think the Catholic Church is perfect either. i have my own views of what the Catholic Church is now. are you sure you want to go there? then go ahead and start the appropriate topic.

i'll throw the question back at you. have you looked in the mirror and did you like what you see? just curious.

    guys,

if this topic degenerates into more personal attacks, warn me in advance so i can make like a tree, and split.

    sheesh.
