May 4th, 2005 03:52 PM #52i saw Star Wars in a theater when it was first shown and as a kid I was hooked. I'm a big scifi fan and so it was only natural that I would really like the series.
My cousin is a big LOTR fans and he always complains that SW is so poorly written and the acting is terrible (young Anakin and Jarjar). But IMHO looking for Shakespearean acting is SW is asking for too much and misses the point of what movies like SW are all about: entertainment. SW fans go to watch the movies not to look for religious or philosophical significance. they go to have fun, to be entertained. And SW does this very very well, for me and other SW anyway.
IMHO, it would have been better if George Lucas just design the ships, technology and look of the series and have someone else write the scripts. But he didn't so we have to live with it. Despite these weaknesses, the films are still very entertaining and I expect the same thrills I experienced when I first witnessed the huge Imperial Star Destroyer fill the screen in 1977

critics point to Akira Kurosawa's classic "The Hidden Fortress" as a sort of template for the Star Wars movie. Parang similar nga story. Astig samurai escorts princess back to her kingdom etc etc.
and the Japanese influence, i think, doesn't stop there. There's also the clothes and the fighting style for the light saber duels which is actually kendo.
as an aside, I like the series, its plain entertainment. But I aint going to spend the night waiting outside moviehouses or dress up in the costumes.
