WHEN THEY WERE ON "PINOY Big Brother," the reality challenge's "housemates" were required only to be themselves. As such, most of them soon struck us as not very interesting or textured people.
Thus, we thought it was quite a waste of TV's starmaking power for it to have been expended on such bland or predictable people.
After the competition ended, the "housemates" were lionized and built up as TV personalities, or even celebrities. True enough, the new "stars" did become quite popular-but, their genuine interest value remained rather lame.
Like a bleak self-fulfilling prophecy, some of the "PBB" people did become mga bituin-ngunit napaka-lampa at lamya ang ningning!
After some weeks of the largely undeserved overexposure on ABS-CBN shows, we thought that most of the "housemates" would finally resume their non-celebrity lives-but, it was not to be!
All of a sudden, there they were again all over the TV screen-only this time, not as themselves, but as performers!
That turned out to be adding insult to injury, because their performances were generally even more inept than their "personal appearances."
In comedy scenes, they looked either stolid or TH-hysterical. In drama, they were mawkishly melodramatic. Only very occasionally did they pass muster as actors, so after the flurry of guest stints, and so-called specials, stars were definitely not born!
Yes, winner Nene could do well on "Citizen Patrol," but she wouldn't be performing there, she would simply host a public-service segment of ABS-CBN's evening newscast, and she should do that fairly well, because her heart's in the right place.
And yes, Sam Milby should make it as a matinee idol by way of his first film, "Close to You," because his role in it is light and undemanding. And his passable singing ability is another asset he can count on in launching his show biz career.
But, is he here to stay? That's not certain at all. Just like Troy Montero, he's handsome, has a killer smile, sort of sings -- but, he is a balikbayan who speaks mostly in English. That combination hasn't made a big star of Troy even after years and years, so why would it work for Sam?
To truly achieve stardom, Sam should learn to speak Tagalog as fast as possible, and hone his performing talents with workshops, so he has more to offer than just his signature smile.
As for the other "housemates," some are being packaged as ***y actresses, kontrabidas and comedians, but their chances of success are even less auspicious.
