i feel ecstatic when i saw the pics. it only proves that the more industry tries to improve peoples' lifestyles the more the environment gets ugly. WOW Philippines talaga yung mga nasa pics...........
Theveed: nice pix bro. I am a self confessed nostalgic fool. I am also a history buff and I love glossing over old photos of Manila(and it's environs) and reading the history of the old city. I was reading a book about Intramuros the other week Muslims were already established and ruling Manila when the Spaniards came. Ermita area was already considered suburbs as it was outside the wall of Intramuros. After Ermita many old rich families moved to New Manila. An old aunt of mine also said that Proj.4 area is considered very far already back then. When I have the chance to travel abroad I like walking in the inner cities, looking at museums and old buildings and wondering it must have been nice to live in Manila back then. May Tranvia pa nun and wala pang pollution. Kung wala lang traffic (or at least managed) and malinis ang air natin, malaki ang gaganda ng Manila. I saw some old plans of the Circumferential roads (e.g C3, C5) and the Radial roads and it is really nice. From the bay of Manila the C roads are like ripples or half circles going out side the city and radial roads cutting it. Same as what you have in big cities in Europe like Paris and Munich. I've visited a couple of major cities abroad and everytime, sabi nga.... there is no place like Manila. I think in our own way as tsikoteers we can contribute to bringing back the glory of what Manila was back then. Things like disciplined driving, wag magtapon ng kalat sa kalye (this I cant understand why some educated people throw out thrash outside the windows of their cars when it is basic logic to place it inside a thrash bin) or even maintaining our cars so that we dont emit excessive pollutants. Big part of the glory back then were the people, the Manilenyos who had pride in being Filipinos. Somehow we have to rediscover this lost pride. Sa atin simula nyan.
I grew up nga pala in Andalucia or better known now as Alfonso Mendoza in Sampaloc. Saranggola, taguan and tumbang preso were the in things during summer time.
I use to walk to Luneta with my family during weekends for picnic sa harap ng CCP. I also walked the breakwater several times during my teenage years. Minsan naka BMX lang kami. Pag New Year we would enjoy the fireworks sa Luneta and eat lugaw dun sa resto na puro bulag. Makes you wonder bakit masarap pa rin yung lugaw. He!he!
naabutan ko pa yung linggo linggo na roller skates kami sa Luneta, i dont know much about comparing politics back then, bata pa ako nun, all i know is, as a foreigner (even mga foreign friends namin) we loved manila, masaya kami dito, mga bumibisita dito balik ng balik... ngayon, kahit ang mura mura ng ticket papunta dito, kahit libre ang stay nila ayaw nila pumunta, sayang lang daw pera dahil nasa traffic ka lang whole day, dumi, dami pang bastos ngayon sa service sector.
tama si gary, the locals need to have pride and show their pride through good deeds, not puros "PINOY AKO! PROUD TO BE PINOY" tapos kita mo tatapon ng yosi kung san san, iihi kung san san, walang disiplina mag maneho, etc etc...
I would like to think that true Filipinos are the ones who actually don't throw stuff out anywhere, those who still care about the environment, the country... Those who don't care shouldn't be called Filipinos at all.
Pero OT na...
Back to the pix, maybe over the next few months I will find time to take photos of the same areas, and we'll see how far we've gone. I think Roxas Blvd is beautiful again in its own way.
I haven't been to the new Roxas boulevard yet, yung may walkway na and all, but I do prefer walking sa Makati at night, pag tapos na office hours or weekend na umaga (before the mall open), maayos at medyo urban tranquility sya... One time wala ako magawa, I left the office (sa may Urban Bank) naglakad ako from Pasong Tamo to Glorietta, relaxing sya, layo compared sa daytime or rush hour.
Magnolia house!! andyan pa naman hehe (just a couple of blocks away!), yun nga lang, nestle-magnolia na yung karatula at blocked yung view by an extremely ugly elevated railway
nice to reminisce old days!!! korek ka dun sir theveed, puro lang "GALING NG PINOY" pero la naman gawa, la kwenta di ba. Sabi mo nga eh sa pag drive lang eh walanghiyaan na eh...
Ganda n ngayon sa baywalk...pero congested nga lang compared 30 yrs ago (population natin nun eh kakaunti lang eh)...pero baywalk is one example that if there are dedicated people around, eh there is no such thing as impossible.

On the financial side, I heard that Magnolia is back on its own again. Di ko lang matiyak kung binitawan ng Nestle or buy back option ang ginawa.
But I've seen Magnolia products on grocery shelves without the Nestle brand.
