in the olden days, snap-on hubcaps were very common. they were removed using a special hubcap puller or a large, flat-blade screwdriver.
sometimes, especially when installed incorrectly, they can detach and run away from the car.
also, there are many hubcap collectors out there...
thus, some manufacturers decided to make it more difficult for the hubcaps to detach. one way was for the caps to be held in place by the lug nuts.
we also notice, vios users use plastic ties to handcuff their hubcaps in place.
