GENERAL SANTOS CITY, South Cotabato, Philippines -- A bomb exploded at the public market in Barangay South Dadiangas here yesterday afternoon, killing at least 13 people, including a 5-year-old boy, and wounding 53 others.

Witnesses said three people died on the spot. Four victims died at St. Elizabeth Hospital and six others at General Santos Hospital.

At least 23 of the wounded were brought to St. Elizabeth Hospital, 19 to General Santos Hospital and six to District Hospital.

Witnesses said the bomb exploded at Stall No. 82 of the meat section at around 4:15 p.m. The market's ceiling was damaged and the stall was destroyed.

Shoppers and merchants fled in panic after the explosion and police cordoned off the area.

"The earth shook," said one dazed woman. "It was a loud explosion."

In Manila, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye denounced the bombing.

"We condemn in the strongest terms this attack against innocent civilians. There is no justification whatsoever for this heinous act. The police and military are now conducting a thorough probe of this incident," Bunye said.

    Feuding merchants

Chief Superintendent Antonio Billiones, the region's police chief, told reporters that his men were still investigating to determine the type and make of the explosive used in the attack.

Police noted recent reports of threats from the Abu Sayyaf, a group linked to the regional militant network Jemaah Islamiyah (JI). But the city mayor said the blast could have been caused by feuding merchants.

Billiones said police had been getting intelligence reports as early as September on alleged plans by the Abu Sayyaf to bomb the city.

"I don't want to speculate at this point on any group that could be behind the attack because there are so many rebel groups operating in the city," he said. "It's too premature to pin the blame on any particular group at this time."

    Plan to burn market

But Mayor Pedro Acharon dismissed talk that the attack was the work of terrorist groups. He said he had received reports that two groups of stall owners were fighting for control of the market.

"We have been on alert because we learned about a plan to burn the market four days ago," he told reporters. "This will hurt the city's efforts to attract investors and tourists."

Barangay South Dadiangas chairman George Catapang Jr. said that as early as Friday, his men had received a report from an informant that there was a plan to burn the market.

Catapang said another village official, Quintin Catolico, reported the alleged plot to city police Chief Superintendent Willie Dangane, who had sent policemen to the market.

    Names of victims

Killed at the blast site were Erning Plasabas, Renato Kausing and a still unidentified female.

Five-year-old Nico Plomeda, Rokma Adam, Joselyn Beñas and Tomasa Villaber died while being treated at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Those who died at General Santos Doctors Hospital were Divina Panaligan, Degoy Sabilita, Eduardo Beñas, Rosalinda Morales, Jemuel Plasabas and an unidentified child.

Senator Richard Gordon, chair of the Philippine National Red Cross, told the Inquirer last night that the Red Cross had brought 50 bags of blood to the hospitals. An additional 60 bags will be made available, he said.

Gordon said Fr. Louie Fuentestina, a member of the Red Cross board in the city, had performed the last rites on some of the fatalities.

In April 2002, 14 people were killed while more than 60 others were wounded when a bomb exploded at the Filmart shopping center here.

The attack was blamed on the Abu Sayyaf, but security officials say the JI planned, financed and directed the attack.

No improvement in Poe’s condition, visitors say

(UPDATE) MOVIE actor and defeated presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr. is still deep in a coma and his condition does not seem to have improved, supporters who visited him Monday said.
“There is no improvement,” film director Butch Bautista told reporters at the St. Luke's hospital lobby, after visiting Poe at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Bautista, perennial Poe sidekick Berting Labra and novelty singer Fred Panopio observed that Poe was tethered to several pieces of medical equipment.

The 65-year-old actor suffered a stroke late Saturday evening and has been confined to the hospital since then.

His doctors are expected to release a bulletin on his condition Monday afternoon.

Before he left, Panopio sang “Dito sa Pitong Gatang,” the theme song of one of Poe's movies. He sang the said song every night during Poe's election sorties.

Poe's running mate, former senator Loren Legarda brough him a statue of the Our Lady of Manoag.

Legarda said she was praying that the Catholic icon's miraculous powers would heal Poe.

Senators Aquilino Pimentel Jr., Alfredo Lim, Manuel “Lito” Lapid, and Richard Gordon also visited Poe.

“He is the leader of the opposition so we have to show our support,” Pimentel told reporters.

As bigwigs in showbiz and politics arrived in their luxury cars, a handful of fans also came to show their support for their idol, but they were not allowed inside the hospital.

Nelia Asanes of Marikina City prayed the rosary with three others at the building's main door.

    Poe’s condition worsens--doctors

(2nd UPDATE) MOVIE actor Fernando Poe Jr.'s condition has deteriorated, according to a bulletin his doctors issued on Monday.
“He is still in a coma and has multiple organ system involvement. His blood pressure is being supported by medicines, neurologist Abdias Aquino said, reading from the only statement they released for the day.

“He suffered from a severe brain attack (stroke) secondary to multiple infracts involving both the anterior and posterior brain circulation due to the occlusion of blood vessels, Aquino said, refusing to elaborate on their diagnosis.

Supporters who visited Poe earlier on Monday said his condition did not seem to improve but added they had not stopped praying for his recovery.

House Minority Floor Leader Francis Escudero read a similar bulletin at the House of Representatives.

Escudero said Poe’s condition deteriorated compared to Sunday night.

“If he (Poe) was able to breathe on his own last night, he is now under medication and is attached to machines to support his blood pressure said Escudero, the actor’s spokesman.

Asked if it meant that Poe was on life support, Escudero referred to the bulletin, adding, “So it’s one way of saying that.

“While the indication is not positive, we are still praying and hoping for the best, he said.

He called on the people to pray for the immediate recovery of the actor, who ran and lost against Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the hotly contested May presidential election.

Escudero also informed the public that except for the patient’s close relatives, visitors would not be allowed on the third floor and intensive care unit of the St. Luke’s Medical Center, where the actor is confined.

Escudero was one of the last persons with Poe before he was brought to the hospital Saturday night after complaining of dizziness.

Poe’s friends from in and out of showbusiness had been coming in droves since news of the actor’s condition spread over the weekend.

Poe’s partymates in the opposition bloc, led by runningmate and former senator Loren Legarda, also came to offer their support.

Legarda brought him a statue of the Our Lady of Manoag and said she was praying that it would perform a miracle for Poe.

Senators Aquilino Pimentel Jr., Alfredo Lim, Manuel “Lito Lapid, and Richard Gordon also visited Poe.

“He is the leader of the opposition so we have to show our support, Pimentel told reporters.

It's not like FPJ's the first person in history to have a stroke. I bet several other people in the city are confined in another hospital also because of a stroke; should they expect the same publicity as well?

If he recovers, well and good. If the worst happens, well, I suppose he's already lived a full life. Granted, a life far from perfect for many people, but still the fact that he's lasted this long and accomplished so much in movies must have ensured his legacy as "Da King". Many say he's a good man, and I'm not questioning that. I'm not even belittling the condition that he's in right now. But we have more pressing concerns in Aurora and Quezon.

I say, it would be best if the country left him alone for a change. Take away the media hype, and just let him face the biggest fight of his life. Let him come to terms with his own mortality, not as FPJ the screen hero, but as Ronald Allan Poe, the ordinary man.

My only concern is baka kung anong maisip gawin ng mga alipores niya pag nangyari yung kinatatakutan nila.

Poe ‘very much alive,’ says ally

Get INQ7 breaking news on your SMART mobile phone in the Philippines. Send INQ7 BREAKING to 386.

DESPITE his worsening condition, movie actor and former presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr. is “very much alive,” contrary to reports that he had died, one of his supporters said Monday.

“Take it from me. He is still very much alive,” said Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay, who campaigned for Poe in the May presidential election.

Binay issued the statement after visiting Poe at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the St. Luke's Medical Center.

Former senator and Poe spokesman Vicente Sotto III, in a separate interview, said the actor's doctors would issue another medical bulletin.

Poe suffered a stroke late Saturday and had been in a coma since then.

Earlier Monday, another Poe spokesman, Sorsogon Representative Francis Escudero said Poe’s condition was “deteriorating.”
