FERNANDO Poe Jr., who died early Tuesday after having a stroke, was one of the Philippines' best known and best loved tough-guy actors who topped a successful acting career with a failed bid for the presidency.
Supporters of Poe, who was 65 when he died at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City, worshipped him as the champion of the underdog, a role he perfected on the silver screen.
But his critics mocked him as a dim-witted film star who would have led the Philippines to ruin if he had become president.
In a country in love with celebrity, Poe was the biggest movie star around, a self-made millionaire who was loved by the man-in-the-street for his depiction of heroes who overcame huge odds to protect the oppressed.
Known simply as "Da King" or by his initials "FPJ," Poe dropped out of school at 15 and built a successful movie career and film business. His production company FPJ Productions is said to be one of the biggest in the country.
Philippines, Poe was a relatively unknown figure until he decided to stand in this year's presidential election despite his total lack of experience in politics.
He promised very little to the voters.
"Breakfast, lunch, and dinner" was the slogan of his faltering campaign, which saw the actor blow a huge opinion poll lead to arrive at election day trailing incumbent Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
To the half of the Philippines' population who live on under two dollars a day, Poe's simple message offered hope and brought back memories of Joseph Estrada, the movie star president forced out of office in 2001 by a military-backed revolt.
Estrada, in detention fighting corruption charges, had endorsed Poe and was believed to have backed his campaign financially in the hope of winning a pardon if his close friend was elected.
Poe's campaign was more about showbiz than politics. His aides were film stars, his bodyguards stuntmen and he liked to pepper his election speeches with some of his most famous one-liners.
But he proved to be a disastrous candidate and lost the election to Arroyo by more than one million votes.
Some of his closest friends have said that he was reluctant to stand for the presidency and only did it as a favor to his old friend and acting buddy Estrada.
Born Ronald Allan Kelley Poe, the son of film star Fernando Poe and an American mother Elizabeth Kelley, Poe always seemed destined for a life in the movies.
He changed his name to Fernando Poe Junior to bank on his father's popularity.
He dropped out of high school after his father died and took a job as a messenger in a film exchange office.
Later he took bit parts as a stuntman for Everlasting Pictures before being given his first real acting role in the film "Son of Palaris" in 1950.
Poe’s biggest break was in the film "Lo Waist Gang" in 1956. It marked the local cinema’s shift from the fantasy world of costume productions to the trendy realism of action movies.
He starred in some 200 films specializing in Robin Hood-style guerrillas and honest cops who overcame fearsome odds, corrupt politicians, and gangsters to secure victory for the common man.
Just as Arnold Schwarzenegger is "The Terminator," Poe was "Panday" or "The Ironsmith," a working class hero who struck down challengers with a giant magic sword modeled on King Arthur's Excalibur.
Through his years in the spotlight, Poe had guarded his privacy closely and tried to cultivate an image of incorruptibility, revealing little about his supposed storybook marriage to fellow movie star Susan Roces.
However the image slipped a little in February when Poe was forced to admit he had fathered a child out of wedlock with a minor starlet, denting his reputation as "Mr. Clean."
The son will try to follow in his famous father’s footsteps. Ron Poe, an aspiring actor, adopts his father’s ‘Low Waist Gang’ look as he emerges from St. Luke’s Medical Center where he visited Fernando Poe Jr. Monday night.
The remains of Philippine movie icon Fernando Poe Jr. will be brought to Manila Cementerio del Norte in La Loma, Quezon City, for burial on December 22.
"Mr. Poe will be buried beside his father, Fernando Poe Sr., mother, Elizabeth Arnold, and brother Andy at Cementerio del Norte in La Loma," said Susan Tagle, the Poe family spokesman.
Tagle said the wake will be held at Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City.
"I just want to reiterate the family's request that the public give them some privacy for a few hours before Mr. Poe's remains are moved to Santo Domingo," Tagle said.
Fans and supporters of the actor flocked to Arlington East Funeral Homes in Pasig City on Tuesday. Police and village watchers have been deployed on the streets to control the flow of pedestrians.
Tagle, who has worked for the Poe family for 21 years, said Susan Roces, the actor's wife, is "being strong for the family."
"I think she knows that she has to be the anchor of the family at the moment and she is really standing strong in the midst of this very sad event. But I’m sure that her own private time, she will grieve for this very, very great loss," Tagle said.
Poe, 65, died of a stroke at 12:01 am Tuesday after falling into a coma Sunday.

SAN CARLOS CITY -- This city in central Pangasinan, where actor Fernando Poe Jr. traced his roots, mourned his death on Tuesday as residents and officials started tying black ribbons around trees and lampposts in the city proper.
Former Vice Mayor Harry Cagampan said "residents here offered Masses and prayers for Poe, the city's most famous son."
Theological explanation behind this cliche: We all have a purpose for existing around here. And we'll be around here until it is done. How come the evil people are still around then? Well they haven't fulfilled their purpose yet, and they're being given second chances.
The "practical" problem: Some things are just downright useless; they have no purpose. Same with certain people. (Ilang "Second Chances" na kaya ang naibigay kay Vandolph?)
FPJ really did fulfill his purpose. What a way to end it too - by giving a pretty damn good showing in the elections. IMO, he was probably sincere, but I thought the people around him (Mr. A*****) weren't.
my condolence to his family in their hours of bereavement..may FPJ rest in peace..
tama na, subra na, pahinga kana 'igan...
mabait ka sana and you know in your own simple analytical mind what is good for the country..saludo ako sa pagiging pilipino mo in your own unique, makamasa way..
paalam FPJ..one of the most unforgettable pinoy characters ever lived..

THE ELECTORAL protest of the late Fernando Poe Jr. against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will likely be dismissed, following his death, a report quoting a pro-opposition senator said Tuesday.
Senate Minority Floor Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. said the case could not continue because it no longer had a complainant.
Pimentel, senatorial candidate under Poe’s party in the May election, however said the Presidential Electoral Tribunal should proceed with the complaint of former senator Loren Legarda against Vice President Noli de Castro.
Poe and Legarda on July 23 asked the court for a recount of the results of the election, claiming they were cheated.
They accused Arroyo and her backers of "massive and widespread electoral fraud."
Members of the PET are scheduled to convene Tuesday to discuss Poe’s protest.
Poe died at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, following a massive stroke he suffered late Saturday during a party he held for employees of his movie company.

BARELY 24 hours after the death of actor Fernando Poe Jr., members of the opposition bloc are looking at his widow to take his place as a leader of the group.
Senator Edgardo Angara, president of the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP), in an interview on local television, said that Roces, a popular actress herself in the ‘60s, could be the next leader of the opposition.
"Maybe we could ask her (Roces) if she wants to lead the opposition or if she just wants to remain a supporter," said Laguna Representative Benjamin Agarao, a member of the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (Fight of the Democratic Filipino), which Angara heads.
Agarao said that the opposition was at a loss, following Poe’s death.
The actor, 65, died at 12:01 on Tuesday after suffering from a massive stroke on Saturday at a party he hosted for employees of his movie production company.
In May, then opposition senatorial candidate Ernesto Maceda said Poe’s wife was a suitable replacement for the actor, whose presidential bid at that time was shaky amid claims that he was not a Filipino citizen.
But Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, Poe’s campaign manager in the last May election, declined to give his opinion when asked by INQ7.net.
"Whatever," said Binay. "He (Poe) had just died maybe it's not proper to talk of these things at this point."
But Negros Oriental Representative Jacinto Paras, another LDP member, said Poe's death had no big impact on the opposition bloc.
"After the election, we individually performed our duties. He shied away from the limelight and he did not perform his duty in terms of leadership," said Paras in a telephone interview.
The opposition had to elect Binay as chairman of the newly formed "united opposition," said Paras.
Binay confirmed that he was elected chairman of the "legitimate opposition" last October and an "agreement of unity" would be signed in January.
