July 10th, 2007 03:16 PM #18Ms. Castrence has adequately explained that on a shopping trip to the base commissary, she brought along a karaoke chip which she bought in the same place in an earlier trip. She had wanted to buy the same chip—the one that contained children’s songs as gift for her granddaughter back home.
Finding none, she put her old sing-along chip back in her bag. It must have been this precise act of putting the old chip back that was recorded on camera, subsequently misinterpreted by security—and without regard to a diplomat’s reputation, leaked to the press. In the same trip to the store, she also passed by a perfume counter and tried a rest-bottle but didn’t make any purchase.
I hope that the US base authorities in Seoul will make the proper and prompt correction, now that the facts have been determined. We should not allow false reports to destroy the good name of a diplomat who has served and continues to serve the country. When you see Ms. Castrence, greet her, for she is one of our finest representatives abroad.
