THE DEPARTMENT of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) has banned commuters from bringing liquids aboard overhead passenger rail systems in Metro Manila.

Spokesman Thompson Lantion told INQ7 in a phone interview that canned sodas, sealed bottled water, hair gel and shampoo may not be brought on board trains of the Light Rail Transit and the Metro Rail Transit.

He said liquid bombs could be disguised this way, hence the ban.

Similar security measures will also be implemented at seaports, airports, and provincial railways, Lantion said.

The ban was implemented after a plot to bomb planes that was to have made use of liquid explosives, was uncovered by authorities in London last week, the spokesman said.

British and Pakistani authorities have arrested as many as 41 people in connection with the alleged plot to detonate disguised liquid explosives aboard as many as 10 planes

That should be ok. Pero dapat aside from that security measures, they should also add some system to prevent buildup of passengers/commuters. With that added security procedure, for sure ingress would be slow and added risk yung maraming tao sa station. Ganyan na nangyari before.

... how are they going to check the hundreds of thousands who ride the MRT/LRT trains on a daily basis without creating a mess?? Imagine you went grocery shopping and plan to go home riding the MRT.

exactly what I thought... hmmm, ibig sabihin laking hassle kapag nag-grocery ka with MRT as your usual ride! dapat siguro magtalaga sila ng isang special inspection section para dito.
on the contrary, parang OA naman yata ito. siguro sa susunod ay pati canned goods din bawal!

Malaking hassle nga ito. Pero, para sa akin, better be safe than sorry.

Ang hirap ng implementation nito. Yon ngang usual operation na wala pang ganyang checks, halos magpatayan na mga pasahero sa pagsakay during rush hour...ngayon pa kaya.

Kung same number of guards, entry/exit points, etc. pa rin tapos with these additional checks. Nakow, hanggang kelan kaya ma-sustain yan??

Anyway, sabi nga, at least siguradong safe sa mga bomba. Pero ako, mag-FX na lang ako no.

I just checked in dito sa NAIA Terminal II and the liquid ban is now being strictly implemented. No choice, I have to check-in my baggage. The ban includes mineral water.

FYI - matagal nang bawal ang canned goods sa MRT.

Mahaba ngayon ang pila sa LRT for the inspection. Kapag may open bottle ka, papainom muna sa iyo to check. Hehe.

open bottle lang ba? pati siguro trash bins ay kailangan dagdagan, can't imagine 2 out of 10 pax with bottle to be disposed... ilan na ba ang pax volume per day ng MRT/LRT?

the security people will be so focused on checking for liquids they will totally overlook the ordinary solid explosive

flash report: MRT is currently pretty empty due to very long lines of passengers waiting to be checked for "banned" items before getting on the train. It's actually faster to take the bus to get to your destination.

Oh no!... next sa bus naman ban din yung mga liquids and gels?!?

I think the theory is, these liquid explosives need to be assembled/mixed with other chemicals and then you have to assemble the electronic detonator to make it work. The theory is, the terrorist will perform this task while at the privacy of an aircraft's rest room.

HOW CAN YOU ASSEMBLE A WORKING LIQUID EXPLOSIVE INSIDE AN MRT COACH? EH DI KINUYOG KA NG MGA PASAHERO.

That's easy. Carry everything in a grocery bag (double bagged, so nothing will spill. Have them in different containers, preferably cans. It's a good bet that if you top off the can with ordinary powdered milk or some such item, they could ask you to open it without actually poking in the milk/flour/milo/etcetera.

Then, as you're sitting, reach inside (supposedly to grab something) and yank tape off the sides of the cans to reveal the liquids in a separate compartment underneath. Let them mix in the bag, toss in the detonator, and...

Of course, this is considering you would go to all that trouble. You could just hide gunpowder or C4 in the said can and put a small detonator inside. As if the security guards ever checked anything carefully.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
