DFA: Ateneo coed first confirmed Pinoy fatality in Phuket

A Filipino who died in the tsunami that hit Phuket, Thailand was identified Thursday even as Philippine embassy officials scrambled to verify additional Filipino casualties.

Ateneo student Sharleen Tan was confirmed to have died in the disaster.

"Tan is the sole Filipino casualty in Thailand as far as the Department (of Foreign Affairs) is concerned," Consul Bernie Candolada told DZMM.

Reports said Tan's father, David who holds a British passport, also died while his son Garvin is still missing.

Candolada said it is difficult to make an official list of Filipino survivors and possible casualties in Thailand due to several factors.

"In Phuket, there are about 70 to 120 Filipino workers. Aside from that, we have Filipino tourists who come and go. There are also Filipino fishermen who work there and make the province a jump-off point," Candolada said.

There are 14 survivors listed in the embassy, Candolada said.

At least 25 Filipinos in Thailand remained missing and unaccounted for as of Thursday, Candolada said.

Candolada said it is difficult to verify the number of Filipino tourists that were in Thailand when the disaster happened as about 12 million tourists flock to the country every year.

The DFA urged the families of missing Filipinos to call the hotline 834-3333 for any information on their whereabouts.

Not to make light of someone's death but medyo ironic ang cause of death niya. Swimmer na nalunod.

I don't see anything IRONIC about her death dahil hindi naman siya nalunod sa swimming pool or ordinary beach water. Kahit Olympic medalist ka pa at ganun klaseng water waves ang tumama sa iyo for sure dadalin ka talaga ng tubig. Sabi nga sa CNN most people if not drowned died when objects hit them.
