I wonder what they do with the old unsold items. I was thinking of getting the last non-Intel iBook just for fun.
Put it on sale? Bundle it to death? Apple rarely offers their old models. They often ship it to bulk buyers to be sold via backchannels.
Maybe I will find one from craigslist.
For me I need to have both. Can't have just one. They have different purposes.
macbook/macbook pro w/ bootcamp will give you the best of both worlds: (get the pro though, the macbook only has 64mb shared video, not very good for gamers)
To be fair, the top end MacBook is $1500 while the cheapest MacBook Pro is $2000.Originally Posted by OTO
The MacBook Pro retains a bigger screen and resolution, has a single 512mb SODIMM versus the MacBook which has 2 x256mb SODIMMs which makes the MacBook Pro ram easier to upgrade, a much more powerful video card by several magnitudes plus dedicated video ram. Shared memory has a habit of making the desktop less responsive in addition to taking away available system ram. Dedicated video ram makes a big difference in desktop responsiveness because dedicated video ram is also much faster than system ram. I think the MacBook Pro also has a PC Card slot.
Otherwise, the two will have the same processor, same hard drive, and Superdrive.
The difference is more like $500.
I'd pick the MacBook Pro. My current HP laptop uses shared ram for the video. I can tell it's much less responsive than my wife's laptop which has dedicated video ram and a slower processor than my HP. I'm never going to buy another laptop with shared video ram.
The highest end Macbook has only 20GB more HDD space & a black finish for additional $200. That has little to no barring on performance. The diff between the $1099 & $1299 is 167Mhz, more HDD space & an optical drive.
So in the sense we're both wrong and it should be a $700 premium. For $700 you could buy a PS3 already.
MBPs have the Express Card.
The Macbook's shared video chipset is bounds better than the iBook dedicated video chipset.
For the specs/price point the Macbook's a good deal.

Mmmmm. No it's not. My wife's Sager P4-1.8ghz laptop and my iBook 800 (G3 800mhz) both have Radeon 7500's with dedicated video ram. Both felt much more responsive than my HP P4-2.4ghz with a Radeon IGP 345 shared video. The Macbook's shared video chipset is bounds better than the iBook dedicated video chipset.
The available ram on the Macbook will not be 512mb. At the most, it'll be more like 496mb. If the shared video ram is set at 64mb, the available ram will be 448mb. Trust me. You do not want shared video ram unless you're strapped for cash. I only have this HP laptop because my wife gave it to me as a birthday present.
And with OSX so dependent upon the 3d capabilities of the graphics chip, the stronger video card with dedicated
video ram will be much smoother esp with all effects on. I was hoping Apple would continue the trend of having discrete graphics. That helped set apart even the low end iBooks from many pc laptops. Now, they're falling into the same trap as budget pc laptops like my HP.
Fancy graphics cards aren't just for games. They're useful for 3d although not as optimized as dedicated workstation cards. Of course, if you're not into those things, then the MacBook will suit you fine.
I'll have to see for myself if the MacBook video subsystem will do fine. I mean my HP laptop was fine to me until I saw how much more speedy and responsive the desktops of our iBook and my wife's laptop were.
As for games, That $700 difference would cover the video chip itself plus the capability to game anywhere where there's an electrical outlet. Be it at the local coffee shop (with free wifi) or the airport (also with free wifi) , I see a lot of people playing WoW on their laptops.
The native res of a MacBook Pro should be 1440x900 which uses less pixels than 1280x1024 (already passe for the hardcore gamers). Most gamers with the latest video cards game at 1600x1200 or higher. The X1600 video of the MacBook Pro should be powerful enough to drive games at 1440x900 for a long time.
Compare those to my own gaming res of either 1152x864 or 1280x960. It's really pointless for me to buy newer video cards unless I buy newer monitors and use the higher resolutions.
If I do buy a new laptop, it will have discrete graphics with dedicated video ram.
Edit: The iBook 800 only felt more responsive than the HP after I upgraded from 10.2.3. Jaguar was a (slow) dog in its own right.

I think we're in agreement of which Intel Mac (laptop) the original poster should buy. It's just a matter of which one.If I were to get a Mac, I'd go for an Intel-based one. I think I can install Windows on that too, which should give me more options.![]()
question po apple gurus:
i'm thinking of switching to Macbook and get rid of my problematic Dell laptop (with a lot of spywares, malwares, windows errors etc. ) and in due time, totally forget the Windows-based PC.
madali ba mag-transfer ng files like mp3's, jpegs, mpegs, pdf e-books from WinXP based file system to Apple Macbook filesystem? is it as simple as copying to a usb drive?
pahabol question:
since mayroon din pala limewire/bearshare for Mac OS. ano ba experience nyo dito? bumabagal yun Mac? with a PC, iwanan ko lang ng isang araw, parang isang libong hackers na ata naka-connect sa laptop ko. as in hindi responsive even the keyboard.
I know this is probably selfish of me. But, my trick is not to leave too many files in the "Shared" folder. I move the majority somewhere else whenever Limewire isn't connected.Originally Posted by oldblue
As for migrating those file types to OSX, all should be a piece of cake for the Mac although mpeg2 files may require the purchase of a codec. I know the QT I have on the Mini doesn't play mpeg2 files although mpeg1's are fine.

there seems to be a problem with the new Macbooks, particularly the white one
http://forums.appleinsider.com/showt...threadid=64148
Several owners of Apple Computer's new MacBook computers are expressing concerns after noticing that portions of their shiny white notebooks have inexplicably turned shades of orange.
The problem appears to be affecting the palm rest and other areas of the computer on both the white 1.83GHz and 2.0GHz models. The first signs of the discoloration tend to appear after 2-3 weeks of use, according to posts in an ongoing thread on Apple's support forums.
It's unclear precisely what is causing issue -- some MacBook users speculate it may be a heat-related issue while others are chalking it up to a chemical reaction in the notebook's plastic enclosure.
Adding some support to the latter theory, one user reported that his Toshiba Satellite P30, which utilizes similar polycarbonate plastics, has also experienced the same form of discoloration.
Users have so far found little success in attempting to rectify the problem with a variety of off-the-shelf cleaning agents. According to posts on the Apple support forum, users have tried everything from iKlean and Windex to Ajax and Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser product.
"All the white MacBooks are showing discoloration on the trackpad button and palmrests, though I'm not sure if it's the same as people are describing here," wrote one poster who swung by the Apple Store Soho in order to investigate the issue further. "The ones at the Apple Store were just darkish looking, more gray than yellow."
As of Monday afternoon, Apple had yet to acknowledge the issue internally. However, AppleCare representatives have offered at least one MacBook owner the opportunity to send his notebook into the company's repair depot in Austin, Texas for closer examination.
Apple's computer warranties typically do not cover "cosmetic" issues, which is precisely how some of the company's customer support representatives have categorized the problem.
Apple began shipping the 13-inch widescreen notebooks less than one month ago.
macbook owners. kmusta macbooks nyo? planning to buy the white macbook sometime next week na sana. I love the white one. I just saw the black one sa g4 exhibit parang maaligasgas yun body.

oldblue it really depends on the user's body chemistry and it is easily solved rin. some people excrete oils, acids, sweat, cheese curls stains, nicotine stains & dirt that get collected on the white polymer but it is easily cleaned naman.
this "problem" can also be experienced with the phaseout ibooks. if it does happen to you try a Non-acetone nail polish remover on the yellowing part. for the years i've owned an ibook never had a colorizing problem... just normal wear & tear lang.
mind you these reports are mostly coming from countries that arent known for taking daily baths. baka libag lang nila yun.

yun lang sana hindi heat problem ang cause as the article says. coz I might opt for the black one kahit d ko type yun color and mas mahal pa yun.
btw, pre d na kita nareply-an sa PM. thanks nga pala sa mga tulong mo. you've been very helpful! I do have additional questions . yesterday, I tinkered with the intel mac desktop on display sa glorietta. I noticed that the MS Office for Mac has ninety day expiration (or 30 days ata, cant remember). yun ba sa Macbook ganun din? or for free na yun MS office for Mac?
and my last questions bro, ok ba yun internet browser client ng Mac OS X Tiger? or do I only get to view websites that are Mac-supported? how about windows active-x websites? kaya ba nya i-view?
