This is actually a very old (classic) problem. Actually all the problems posted are old classics.

The description is actually incomplete since the conditions actually are as follow:

If left alone, the fox could eat the rooster.
if left alone, the rooster could eat the rice.

Solution:

Boat brings rooster to other side.
Boat goes back.
Boat brings fox to other side.
Boat brings rooster back to original side.
Boat brings rice to other side.
Boat goes back.
Boat brings rooster to other side.
