QC expects violence in squatter demolition

Quezon City expects violence attending the eviction of over 2,000 squatter families in North Triangle near North Triangle Mall (TriNoma) by Aug. 31 to make way for a P22-billion joint project between Ayala Land Inc. and the National Housing Authority.
City administrator Victor Endriga said the NHA is bent on removing 9,000 squatter households in Sitio San Roque, Barangay Pag-asa, North Triangle in the city’s central business district on Aug. 31 following the failure of some 2,000 families to qualify under the government’s shelter program.
“We expect uprising from 2,000 families. Only 7,000 others have been qualified to avail themselves of the relocation and housing program in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, and Rodriguez, Rizal,” Endriga said.
He said NHA representatives on Thursday met with Mayor Herbert Bautista and other city hall officials to inform them about the scheduled eviction of 9,000 squatter families on Aug. 31, and transfer of only 7,000 qualified beneficiaries to the relocation sites.
“We do not want to overreact, but reality bites. We anticipate tension,” he added.
He said the city government is finding ways to dispel the looming tension and violent demolition.
Endriga said North Triangle residents have not yet been told about the disqualification of 2,000 families under the Urban Development and Housing Act of 1992.
“We do not want to initiate telling them about this because that would at once spark resistance,” he said.
On Sept. 23, 2010, residents of Sitio San Roque clashed with police and the NHA demolition team when they were forced to leave the place.

Aug. 29 and 30 ang holidays. Time for the hordes to set up their defenses against the demolition... Aug. 31=National Heroes day, how ironic.

I hope they improve the interior a bit. The current is IMHO low-rent for the price.
