MANILA, Philippines – A 28-year-old member of the Philippine fencing team, along with two of his companions, figured in a brawl in a restaurant at the Metrowalk in Pasig City on Thursday night, costing the restaurant about P50,000 in unpaid bills and damaged furniture.

PO3 Bobby Lumiwag said fencer Wally Mendoza, and his friends Ricardo Junio, 29, and Jeffrey Pineda, 26, exchanged punches with Bimbo Fontenilla, 27, Autozone owner and manager, and Jasper Velasquez, 29, a tow truck driver, at Dencio’s Restaurant in Pasig City at about 10:45 p.m. on Thursday.

Fontenilla told police that Pineda suddenly punched him as the latter was leaving the bathroom. Pineda, on the other hand, said it was Fontenilla who delivered the first blow when he got impatient as he waited to use the bathroom.

All five sustained bruises and wounds from blows and broken bottles, police said. Bernardo Laynon, manager of Dencio’s, told police that the brawl cost the restaurant P10,000 in broken utensils and furniture, and P36,000 in unpaid bills because customers fled to escape the fight.

Lumiwag said charges were supposed to be filed against the suspects, but both sides agreed to settle with the restaurant. After negotiations with the management, the two sides agreed to pay P7,000 each to Dencio’s.
