Transport strike set for Nov. 25
    By Rainier Allan Ronda
    The Philippine Star 11/23/2004

Transport groups announced yesterday they will be definitely be staging a nationwide transport holiday on Nov. 25 to protest the continued increase in the price of oil, particularly diesel, and their opposition of anti-driver and operator road policies being implemented by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

Efren de Luna, national president of the Philippine Confederation of Drivers Organizations-Alliance of Concerned Transport Operators (PCDO-ACTO) said his group and other major jeepney groups as well as bus operators had decided to stage the transport holiday to reiterate their demand for a "very necessary" diesel discounts.

The other groups are the Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (FEJODAP), the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper and Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON), ALTODAP and MJODA and Integrated Metro Manila Bus Operators Association (IMMBOA).

De Luna said they also want the government to cancel the no-contact traffic apprehension and multi-ticketing system of issuing traffic violation tickets of the MMDA.

"Tuloy na tuloy na. Magho-holiday kami sa Nov. 25. Sa tingin naming ay kailangan na talaga naming mag-strike para pakinggan kami ng gobyerno," De Luna told The Star.

He called on commuters to understand the public transport groups in their protest action, saying that they have long conveyed to the government the extreme importance of their demands so that their sector would "survive in these hard times."

"We have been postponing the transport holiday for several times to give time to the government to address our demands, but they had not acted on any of their promises," De Luna said.

Alex Yague, Provincial Bus Operators Association of the Philippines (PBOAP) national president, who was present in the press conference conducted by the four major jeepney groups and IMMBOA, said their organization would be meeting today to discuss the transport holiday.

"From what I hear, their grievances are legitimate," Yague said.

However, Yague declined to say if the provincial bus operators will be joining the strike.

It will be recalled that the jeepney groups had been threatening to stage a surprise transport holiday in the previous months instead of an announced one to catch authorities off guard and prevent them from pleading with them to postpone it by making promises of action on
the nerve... they also want to cancel the no-contact aprehension and multi-ticketing system of the MMDA? for what???

Baka nakalimutan nyo na... Bus and Jeepney Drivers are the King and Prince of the Road.

I have an American Boss. He always told foreigners that visit the philippines that if you want to study philippine culture all you have to do is to stand atop the bridge along EDSA for 10 minutes and watch how the traffic flow. How car travels, how drivers behave and how pedestrian move? But don't worry my boss is proud of the country on some other aspect.

come to think of it...gobyerno ang may kasalanan.

    Attention MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando!!!

IMHO, driving should be taught in secondary schools, then we will have educated drivers. Maybe if they will start right away, we will have better drivers for let say in the next 4 years?

you just gave me an idea... :D

give drivers a random road-sign and road-etiquette test.

if 75% ang pumasa, give them the damned discount. if not, freeze fare increases for the next 2 years...

    sounds fair for me... :D

    5. sobrang sweet lover (maraming kabit)

yung issue about the volume of PUVs out in the roads... weird... gaya gaya sila eh... may nagkwento lang na okay ang kita sa pamamasada.. ang dami nang gumaya... sa dami ng gumaya eh nagsisiksikan na sila.. as if naman dumadagdag ang mga kalye... oo maraming pasahero.. pero all within a time lang.. around rush hour talaga marami pasahero.. pero pag hindi rush hour.. ang daming PUVs.. nakapila.. papaanong lalaki ang kita nila... kuntento na sa pipila sila?

Totally Agree! The thing lang din kasi as what I have observed is that these Oil companies are passive when they justify their increases. Also, these drivers need to be EDUCATED about economics. I don't mean to sound condescending but they really don't know anything about economics. I would say: EDUCATE, EDUCATE, EDUCATE by information drive!!! Problema lang din kasi is paano matuturuan if gutom ang tiyan, di ba?

The way I see it, these oil companies seem passive na parang lumalabas they have bad intentions when they increase their prices. Dapat kasi when they have the right to increase, they should stand-up and speak to the people with full conviction.

I know na we probably took ECONOMICS Class for granted in College(guilty din ako niyan), but it comes handy during times like this. Example is the economic reforms ni Pres. GMA. Gusto ba naman ng mga tao na makakita agad ng effect ng reform three months after the declaration of the new president. Ano ba naman niyan? Hindi naman mina-magic ang economics. It takes time to achieve economic success.

To sum it all up, I guess the government should try to do a very massive information drive about economics to stop all this transport strike to happen in the future.

    My two cents.....

    OT:

nagawa nga ni GMA yan! 3 months after declaring there was a fiscal crisis, nakapag recover na daw tayo!
