Transport groups announced yesterday they will be definitely be staging a nationwide transport holiday on Nov. 25 to protest the continued increase in the price of oil, particularly diesel, and their opposition of anti-driver and operator road policies being implemented by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
Efren de Luna, national president of the Philippine Confederation of Drivers Organizations-Alliance of Concerned Transport Operators (PCDO-ACTO) said his group and other major jeepney groups as well as bus operators had decided to stage the transport holiday to reiterate their demand for a "very necessary" diesel discounts.
The other groups are the Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (FEJODAP), the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper and Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON), ALTODAP and MJODA and Integrated Metro Manila Bus Operators Association (IMMBOA).
De Luna said they also want the government to cancel the no-contact traffic apprehension and multi-ticketing system of issuing traffic violation tickets of the MMDA.
"Tuloy na tuloy na. Magho-holiday kami sa Nov. 25. Sa tingin naming ay kailangan na talaga naming mag-strike para pakinggan kami ng gobyerno," De Luna told The Star.
He called on commuters to understand the public transport groups in their protest action, saying that they have long conveyed to the government the extreme importance of their demands so that their sector would "survive in these hard times."
"We have been postponing the transport holiday for several times to give time to the government to address our demands, but they had not acted on any of their promises," De Luna said.
Alex Yague, Provincial Bus Operators Association of the Philippines (PBOAP) national president, who was present in the press conference conducted by the four major jeepney groups and IMMBOA, said their organization would be meeting today to discuss the transport holiday.
"From what I hear, their grievances are legitimate," Yague said.
However, Yague declined to say if the provincial bus operators will be joining the strike.
It will be recalled that the jeepney groups had been threatening to stage a surprise transport holiday in the previous months instead of an announced one to catch authorities off guard and prevent them from pleading with them to postpone it by making promises of action on
