what's the difference between ethernet hub & broadband router?

may dsl connection ako pero sa isang computer lng, gus2 ko dalawa pang computer mern din, ano gagamitin ko para pde share internet lahat conputer.

im using netgear wireless router, 2000 pesos lang ata, para sabay kami ng bro ko use dsl, pareho lang ata, pero sabi sa akin ng taga pldt na nagkabit pag router daw u wont share the speed, tipong both the computer get the same speed paid ( correct me if im wrong)

basically, both are designed to network your computers

the hub connects your computer but the speed gets slower as the no. of computers increases, compared to switches, each port is independent...if you have a 4-port switch, then all of them are gonna get the same speed/bandwidth...so mas preferred and switch

what you need is a cable/dsl router, even those with wireless connection...there are a lot there in the market with linksys being given very favorable reviews so far, then there's d-link, netgear, IO gear, etc.
almost all models have built in switch in them...4 ports are the most common, they say you can use up to 250 computers on it, using other switches to expand your network.

yung pldt mydsl, alam ko they also market linksys routers...

plug and play lang usually yan kung cable connection ka, pero kung dsl, PPPoE (not sure)

the router basically fools your isp into thinking that only a single computer is connected...since it will give the computers an internal ip addresses and the one that's visible to the internet is your public ip (the one provided by your isp), so the function of the router is to route infos. from outside to those internal ip address...also called NAT, serves as your hardware firewall. =)

question ulit, ok lng naman kung ibang brand ng lan card bilin ko para dun sa addtional connection sa computer 2 ryt? what brand magandang bilin sa router at ano dapat specs ang hanapin ko? computer ko kc with dsl line e nasa ground flr, ung pangalawang computer nasa 2nd floor so pano setup?

on your first question, ok lang ibang brand ng lan card ang bilihin. since the only job of the lancard is to have your computer connected to the network, ok lang maski anong brand yan, as long as it is compatible (which in any case, it should be, unless you buy a lancard for an AS400 and you will install it in your PC... )

second question, there are lots of routers available in the market today. recommended brands are CISCO, LinkSys, 3COM.

for price reference, try to visit Villman (http://www.villman.com.ph), although mas mahal ang price nila kesa sa ibang retailers/outlets, somehow you can get some idea how each one costs.

maraming differences and its very technical, but the most basic difference for your purpose is that the router will allow you to connect all your PCs to your DSL modem while the hub or switch will just connect all your PCs together and not be able to connect to the DSL modem.

you can mix and match network components such as network cards, no problem whatsoever.

for the router you can opt for a wired or wireless one. Personally, I use a Linksys router/switch for my home network. I has 1 port for the modem, 1 for cascading (connecting other hubs/switches), and 4 switch ports. At most, I only connect 3 PCs and laptops anyway.

if you don't wanna go through the hassle of laying out a long ethernet cable from your computer on the 2nd flr, mag wireless adapter ka nalang, there are ones for the desktop...that is of course if you'll be getting a wireless router! kung linksys router mo, mag linksys adapters ka naren...but yes, there should be no problem with using multiple brands.

meron den palang adapter that plugs to your usb port para mas madali! around 2-3k plus ata ang mga wireless adapters...make sure its 802.11b or g compliant

You can network different OS, kahit linux + windows + mac. Gamit ko na router DLink Wireless G, sa office nagbebenta kami ng Linksys Wireless G sa mga customer namin.

theoritically...100 feet on the same floor without interference...but common, practical distance would be around 50 - 60 ft tops. this is due to interference (like cordless phones, microwave ovens, etc. which might be using the same frequency -- 2.4ghz) may mga cases na madidisconnect ka whenever the phone rings so dont place it near your phone's base station/s.

you can also connect up to 30 wireless computers typically, but ofcourse sacrificing speed

it depends, if you're not after mobility within your house, id still stick with the regular ethernet connections -- mas stable kse at shempre mas mabilis! 100 mbps versus 11 mbps (wireless b) and 54 mbps (wireless g). maximum cable length will be 100 meters but due to attenuation, you can be safe with 50-80 meters. so kung magkatapat naman yung router mo and your pc on a different floor, either you need to drill so you can use shorter cables or make it pass somewhere else, just make sure you take not of the length to avoid intermittent connections.

Yup, go wireless for your house! The extra speed offered by a wired connection will not affect you so much since the bottleneck is still your wired internet connection.
