the movie's visceral nature reminds me of sin city although sin city's dull bec it was experimental when it was conceived. the vfx pipeline include lightwave 3d/maya/xsi combination for animation & inferno for fx and final cut pro for compositing among others for most of the key sequences in the film. all done in mac and linux platform, in case this is of any interest to you.
to achieve the ancient photography look and feel of the film, blue screen was used extensively rather than the usual green screen including the oracle shot (played by kelly craig) which was filmed under water. every image you see on screen went through a laborious post-production process where you fully saturate the black colour contained in the image while enhancing the other colors to create a very deep contrast. 10 vfx teams scattered throughout 4 countries have to be consistent with this style. all in all it took a year for post prod to finish. the film was shot in 60 days in montreal including 2 days in l.a.
cast have to undergo a rigorous training for 6 weeks prior to shooting and of course underneath all that vfx eyecandy abs you see on screen- not that i'm interested. the historical fighting style and particularly the spartan's phalanx (traditional rectangular shield formation) were purposely changed to somewhat a semi circular armadillo plate formation so "they'd look cool". ayos.
