Most European cars have electrical gremlins (from my previous E36 and E46)...so this doesn't really surprise me....the important thing is, they acknowledged it and they're willing to fix it at their expense.

    Why? Didn't they test it?

They do test it....but as with all electronics - it can fail anytime.

Mercedes-Benz doesnt make cars like they used too. For the amount you pay you'd think they'd be more reliable than Toyotas or Hondas.

So MBs and other Euro cars rely more on electronics than Jap cars?

Yeah, more than the jap cars....with some euro cars, you can't just take off the battery without getting into some problem when you put it back....same with the seats....if you take it off, its not just the 4 bolts....there's the seat heater wire and airbag wires....sounds easy? nope..when you put it back..you have to reset the computer and only the dealer can reset it (unless you have the reset tool).....

euro cars are much much more advanced than you think with their electronics...some have seat memory up to a certain number of drivers..so when you go in the car, it will adjust the seat height, tilt, steering wheel adjustment for you....

it will take me pages if i have to enumarate all their gizmo stuffs..

Problem w/ European cars is that they arent as reliable as before during our dad or grandfather's time. I guess this could be attributed to cutting cost and fattening the bottom line. Most European car owners would not admit it but sometimes their rides are more trouble than they're worth. When they break down the spare parts are insanely expensive, labor from authorized dealers is equally expensive. Just to have their diagnostic computer check your car costs a cool 3-5 grand. Lights conk out and need to be fixed within half a year. Battery discharges after a year. Power windows refuse to work under 2 years. The list goes on and on and on.

Very common yang mga ganon. Blown out of proportion lang kasi publicly announced to avoid further legal problems yan na na-inform lahat ng may-ari. Beleive me, even the most reliable line of cars had recalls. If you think SUBARU is really reliable, do you know how many un-announced recalls when I had my SUBARU for 7 years?? I've had 3 recalls sent to the owners! Pero lumabas ba ito publicly? Nope..

That's the risk the company has to take na i-announce nila publicly but it would save the company millions of dollars for litigation for failure to inform everyone that has their product at may nangyari or aksidente dahil sa recall. If it is already announced na at hindi pinagawa ng may-ari, the car manufacturer will not be responsible for damages and the sole responsibility will be to the owners.

Well, whatever they say about MB, it is still one of my favorites! He he he! Although ngayon, di ko pa kayang bumili at hindi pa yata nababagay sa edad ko. Siguro pag-onset ng midlife crisis, I'd definitely get one!

Ang kaibahan ng jap vs euro in electronics is this...

Euro cars are always more advanced in electronics, thanks to massive investment by Bosch/Philips/Motorola and other major semiconductor companies. But the problem is, like most electronics, they usually take time to test and unlike mechanical devices, it's not as easy to predict what can happen to a circuit when installed in a hostile environment like a car.

Sa Japs naman, they use less electronics, and even when they do go tech crazy, they use older, more tested electronics rather than new ones...

For example, EFI was used in the early 60's Mercedes, mga Japs late na nag EFI almost a decade later.

yep... even the late 80's 5-series has more electronic gizmo (electric seats w/ memory, fuel consumption, maintenance info, etc) than your regular jap sedan.

and also Toyota. freaking silent recalls. I remember then that they just informed me that they've replaced the shocks & brake rotors after they've done it.

and least the Americans & Europeans are more straightforward in dealing with their defects.

mazdamazda I recently recalled Toyota Phil making a recall of the Toyota Echo to repair some fault in that car line. Dunno what happened after that though

theveed any better scans? The text is very hard to read. If you redo it try saving it at a 72 dpi (dots per inch) and save it as a high quality jpeg. The lower dpi is good enough for reading on a computer screen.

pag nag recall ang mga car companies not unless na delikado talaga na gamitin they would go public, the car companies send letters to all the owners advising them of the recall and all recalls are free to the owners.

Yung mga seat memory and seat heating, useful ba talaga pag anjan sa US?

Parang sayang ang electronics lalo na if it causes problems...
