CNN's Anthony Bourdain dead at 61 - CNN

New York (CNN)Anthony Bourdain, a gifted storyteller and writer who took CNN viewers around the world, has died. He was 61.

CNN confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday and said the cause of death was suicide.

"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain," the network said in a statement Friday morning. "His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time."

Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series. His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning.

Bourdain's death happened after fashion designer Kate Spade hanged herself in an apparent suicide at her Manhattan apartment on Tuesday. Spade was found hanged by a scarf she allegedly tied to a doorknob, an NYPD source said.

Suicide is a growing problem in the United States. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a survey Thursday showing suicide rates increased by 25% across the United States over nearly two decades ending in 2016. Twenty-five states experienced a rise in suicides by more than 30%, the government report finds.

If Anthony Bourdain had been a religious man, would he have killed himself? Probably not…

Bourdain was raised by his Catholic father and Jewish mother, though neither of them saw fit to raise him in any religion. In 2011, he said his views on religion were similar to those expressed by Christopher Hitchens, the British atheist. This is why the atheist organization, Freedom From Religion Foundation, was so proud of him

Casting logic aside and believing in God will not cure an addiction or prevent suicide. Being part of a tight-knit community, having a social support network, and having people to turn to in times of need can help. For some people, religion provides that. But it’s not the only option. An atheist group, a sorority, a sports team, a improv group, etc. can all serve those purposes.

God would not have solved Bourdain’s problems, whatever they were. Let’s not forget that studies have also shown how increased religiosity leads to higher rates of suicide for LGBTQ people, and the same holds true in different parts of the world.

I do believe that for some, having a religion stops one from suicide. I should know because that's one of the reasons that stopped me from hurting myself. I don't want to be stuck in purgatory and I want to see my loved ones when I pass on. Also, I think suicide is very selfish. Why? Because you hurt the persons you leave behind and there are MILLIONS of people fighting to live, those with terminal illness or abnormalities - if they are fighting to live in spite of their situation, why should I, a healthy person take my life?

I don't judge persons that committed suicide though because it is a mental illness. It's hard to fight something when it is physical or chemical imbalance in the brain. BTW, suicidal tendencies/depression are hereditary. I know families with that gene and there is always someone in the branch that commits suicide or falls into depression. Usually they have the gay gene also.
