Tiya Dely seemed to me a radio announcer since my first recollection since the late 60's. It's just prudent to honor her achievement.

MANILA, Philippines - Administration Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri on Tuesday filed a resolution honoring the late broadcaster Fidela "Tiya Dely" Magpayo for her achievement and contribution to the country's broadcast industry.

In Senate Resolution 603, Zubiri said Magpayo devoted 68 years of her life to public service through broadcast media.

She suffered a stroke while on deck in the radio booth of dzRH Saturday evening. Magpayo died Monday.

"Tiya Dely's devotion to her profession which she does not consider as work but love is worthy of emulation by professionals not only in the media but also by servants in public service," the resolution read.

Zubiri said Magpayo, 87, had been recognized by various award-giving bodies and media organizations such as the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts who handed to her the Pama-As Gintong Bai (Centennial Women) award; Gawad Plaridel from the University of the Philippines' College of Mass Communication; and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster sa Pilipinas.

Magpayo, considered as the First Lady of Philippine radio, started her career in broadcast media in 1940 at kzRH, predecessor of dzRH.

She was the first voice heard on air over dzMM when ABS-CBN reopened after the EDSA revolution.

Zubiri said Magpayo was one of the few media practitioners who have worked in all broadcast media- radio, movies and television, and even on stage as the leading lady in the Manila Grand Opera House.

In a separate statement, Senator Loren Legarda said she joins the family of Magpayo as they mourn the death of Tiya Dely.

"The Philippine media has lost another giant in the person of Tiya Dely whose human understanding was so deep she had touched so many lives. She was a big loss indeed," Legarda said.

The senator added Magpayo's death created a vacuum in the broadcasting industry in general and dzRH in particular "but she certainly left an indelible mark in the Philippine journalism." - GMANews.TV
