Beauty Pageants are always a crapshoot. Part talent. Part good look. Part luck. First runner-up might be seen as "first loser", but consider she beat the crap out of dozens of other contestants to get there.

I think the more shocking thing is that for the first time I can remember, there was no Miss India in the final ten. And Miss Brazil just barely made the cut for Top Five.

Those are two countries with multiple crowns, where Beauty Queens are an industry. Getting ahead of them is a pretty good achievement.

I expected our girl to get into the top five, but I didn't expect first-runner up. Miss USA, hometown advantage aside, seemed very strong... though very short.

Nakakapanghinayang lang sir Niky, eh 39 years na since we last won Miss Universe. This could be it but we fell short as always.

In the first place nobody joins contest or sports for that matter just to win second place. We join cuz we want to win.

The fact that she got 2nd means we've improved a lot over the past decade.

Beauty Contests are big business elsewhere. There are entire industries dedicated to scouting, spotting, developing and promoting beauty queens in places like the USA, Mexico, Brazil, India and Venezuela. That we beat Brazil and Venezuela, and that India didn't even make the top ten puts us in good company. This was a pretty good batch for 2012. Lots and lots of pretty girls. Lots and lots of tall girls. Second ain't bad at all. And I feel she got that high purely on teh strength of her answer. That's good prep.

Next year, we should obviously aim for the win, but this is a contest judged by human judges on very subjective attributes. Ensuring a win, even with the best contestant is much harder than in something like Gymnastics or Figure Skating.
