    Archbishop denounces Lady Gaga

MANILA, Philippines - Conservative Christians held protests during the first concert night in the Philippines of international pop act Lady Gaga, even as fans were lining up outside the SM Mall of Asia Arena Monday night.

A mass was held in the Shrine of Jesus, The Way, The Truth and The Life parish located in the Mall of Asia complex near the venue.

Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles presided overthe mass and gave a firm homily denouncing the Grammy-nominated singer.

He reiterated that the allusions to Jesus and Christian imagery in Lady Gaga's song "Judas" are considered blasphemy, which could "destroy the spirit of those who listen."

Argulles referred to the singer as "Gaga," saying that he did not consider her a "lady."

"Lady always reminds us of our Blessed Mother, and 'lady' always brings to our mind someone who is worth respect," he said.

He also called on the faithful to pray for the intercession of those who promote and attend the concert.

"We are here to pray for all those who have been instruments in bringing here in our country beloved by God, bringing here evil things, the evil that comes from outside," Arguelles added.

"There are many forces that would like to destroy our country, from within and from without. We ahve to recognize those forces and reject them. Let us save our country."

Lady Gaga rocks Manila, defies critics by singing 'blasphemous' Judas
    May 21, 2012 11:41pm

Lady Gaga rocked the Manila Monday, defying critics and state censors as thousands of fans, many of them dressed as outrageously as she was, roared their approval.

Despite the protests of conservative Christians and warnings by state censors, Lady Gaga declared, "I'm not a creature of your government, Manila."

She then belted out her controversial song "Judas," which her Filipino critics have labeled as blasphemous.

The audience tweeted photos of the US pop phenomenon wearing a full-length yellow dress inspired by the Philippines' national costume as she and a dance crew gyrated for the song "Born This Way"–a gay anthem.

The city government had earlier warned that her second show on Tuesday night could be banned if the censors among the audience monitored any hints of blasphemy, devil worship, nudity or lewd conduct.

Up to 40,000 fans in the Catholic-majority nation paid as much as P15,840 ($370) each to watch the US pop icon.

Her world tour, "The Born This Way Ball," has been dogged by controversy in Asia, with an upcoming concert in Muslim-majority Indonesia cancelled on police orders for fear of violence from religious hardliners.

In the Philippines, Catholic leader Archbishop Ramon Arguelles urged the public to boycott her two concerts. "Her fans are in danger of falling into the clutches of Satan," he told reporters.

Former Manila mayor Lito Atienza, one of those calling for a concert ban, said he was opposed to the song "Judas."

"We respect freedom of expression in this country. We also appreciate art and culture... but the laws should be respected," he told AFP.

But officials in the Manila district of Pasay allowed the show to go on Monday night at the Arena, a new, oblong theatre built in Pasay by the country's richest man, Henry Sy of the SM shopping mall chain.

About 100 "little monsters"–the name given to Lady Gaga's devoted followers–had lined up hours before the show, sporting her signature outrageous clothing, hairstyle and makeup.

A group of about 500 Christian activists tried to march on the Arena, singing religious songs while carrying placards saying "Stop Lady Gaga, the mother monster."

However, riot police stopped them about one kilometer (half a mile) away.

Local authorities earlier said they had worked out a deal to permit the show while addressing the clamor by Christian conservatives.

Censors were in the audience to monitor possible violations of a law against "immoral doctrines, obscene publications and exhibitions and indecent shows," said Glenn Agranzamendez, secretary to Pasay Mayor Tony Calixto.

Christian groups have vowed to send their own monitors and warned they could sue Lady Gaga under a law that penalizes taking part or sponsoring "indecent shows" with prison terms of up to six years.

Despite the protests, the demand for tickets has been so strong that the Manila concert's organizers had to extend the event from the original one-night show to two nights.

Similarly in Hong Kong, huge demand saw organizers extend Lady Gaga's original one-night run to four concerts.

But question marks remain over whether she will be able to perform to 50,000 fans in Jakarta on June 3. Promoters are trying to save the show despite police denying it a permit after Islamic hardliners threatened to unleash "chaos." —Agence France-Presse

Shouting denunciations, branding a person a cult worshipper, agent of the devil, someone not worthy of respect...

Coming from religious leaders, nonetheless. How very... 'Pharisee-tic'.

Allegedly, Gaga will go to jail because of her Judas & Alejandro performance.

Nakita ko yan sa Twitter. And 150 protesters from Jakarta are planning to hurt her.

‘Provocative’ Lady Gaga allowed 2nd Manila show
    By: Nathaniel R. Melican

MANILA, Philippines— Lady Gaga will be allowed to hold a second concert in Manila on Tuesday night after state censors ruled her “provocative” act was within legal bounds, a Pasay City Mayor Antonino Calixto said.

Calixto said a team he sent to monitor the first night of the concert on Monday found nothing wrong with the event.

“Based on the report of the inspection team I sent to the Lady Gaga concert last night, we find no violations of the special conditions of the Special Permit we issued last May 16 to the promoters of the concert, Ovation Productions,” Calixto said.

There was also no nudity or holy symbols used in an improper context, despite some “admittedly provocative” statements and choreography, which was deemed still “part of an artist’s expressions” protected by the Constitution.

“Therefore, the City Government of Pasay sees no compelling or legal reason to disallow the second concert from proceeding,” Calixto said.

Up to 20,000 fans are expected to attend the American pop phenomenon’s final Manila show, the same number as were at Monday’s concert.

Conservative Christians in the Catholic-majority nation have been staging street protests daily to demand a government ban on the events, alleging some of Lady Gaga’s songs are blasphemous.

One senior church leader said her show amounted to “devil worship.”

Lady Gaga spoke out against her local critics at Monday’s concert, declaring she was “not a creature of your government” before belting out her controversial song “Judas.”

Her world tour, “The Born This Way Ball,” has hit the headlines on its way through Asia, with an upcoming concert in Muslim-majority Indonesia denied a police permit for fear of violence from religious hardliners.

Prominent Filipino lawyer Romulo Macalintal, one of those who sought to block the Manila concert, said he was resigned to the local government’s ruling.

“They are the persons authorized by law and if that is their decision, I cannot do anything, I just leave it to God,” he said.

Here is something my high school classmate said on his FB regarding the Lady Gaga protest by the church:

    Faithful Filipinos should rally against:

    1. Graft and corruption: to put an end to the bullshit that our government is feeding the people.

    2. A Church that failed to evolve with the times.

    3. Filipino Mass Media: for being mostly stupid programming that contributes to the stupidity of the people

    4. Themselves for being hypocrites: Of all the things to rally about, it has to be Lady Gaga?

If the show does go on as scheduled, I will perform the BTWBall alone.
And don't worry, if I get thrown in jail in Manila, Beyonce will just bail me out. Sold out night 2 in the Philippines. I love it here!
