    Yup I've seen that.
    In the dashcam video of one of the cars the driver was literally just crusing when it the engine went and the fire started. Seemed to be very new too he still had the plastic wrap on his back seats.

    According to this forum thread, the likely culprit is the Ford designed defective Power Transfer Unit (PTU) in all CX-9 models from 2007-2015:

    Basically the front transfer case (or Power Transfer Unit, PTU) is too close to the exhaust system and gets heated up more than usual. The gear lubricant inside gets deteriorated a lot faster and becomes sludge. In theory gear lubricant in front transfer case、rear differential、and manual transmission can be "life-time" lub under a suitable environment, hence Mazda and Ford don't specify any recommended maintenance interval for gear lubricant replacement and don't even bother to design a drain hole for it! But since the gear lub actually gets heat up so often, it causes problems and makes the front transfer case eventually failed due to sludge issue.

    This one was caught in time. Fuel feed line ruptured daw.



    Lots of ways for a car to burn down, especially turbos since stuff in the engine bay can get really hot especially the turbo itself and the manifolds. If one of the various oil or fuel lines ruptures you can be in for a bad time.

    Looking at the video, it seems the trunk and the engine bay of the CX-9 didn't get as cooked as the cockpit. This is in contrast to the image at the top of the page where the GR that caught fire had most of the fire damage in front of the car.

Despite all the hype surrounding this Dynamic Pressure Turbo, fuel economy in city traffic is stuck at 5.21 km/L improving to just 11.65 km/L during highway driving.
    Looks like a specific issue with the CX9 only, not all Mazda Skyactiv engine models. And doesn't seem a likely culprit for an engine fire.

    Could it be the CX9 Skyactiv model is still using the Ford PTU design? I can only speculate.

    Same engine is used in the CX5 turbo and the phased out Mazda 6 Turbo. Dunno if there are reports of overheating in FB groups.

    Highly doubt Ford is involved this time. They've long broken up. I believe the engineering from the ground up is pure Mazda.

    The drivetrain is shared with the CX-5 mostly as-is.

    I believe the CX-9 is the debut platform for the 2.5T and there were reports of cracking cylinder heads and coolant loss(also affected the 6 and CX-5) purportedly addressed in 2021 with a revised cylinder head.

    There was also Oil consumption issues mostly with 2021 USA MY models due to defective valve stem seals.
