    Dear sniper:

It looks like you have the beginning of a blocked or clogged radiator.

The airconditioner condenser is mounted IN FRONT of the radiator on our pickups.

The condenser gets the coolest fresh air from outside and the radiator gets 2nd hand warmer air from the condenser.

However pickup radiators are oversized and heavy-duty, so normally that would NOT be a problem.

If the cooling system has become sensitive to modest increases in the heat load then there is a problem.

    Try this:

    1) check out the airflow path - make sure that the A/C condenser and radiator are clean and NOT choked with dirt - like leaves, dog hair, mud etc. - blast clean with high pressure water, air or steam.

    2) What type of cooling fan do you use? - Is it a fixed fan or a viscous fan? If it is a viscous-type fan it may be too free-wheeling and need topping up with silicone oil.

    3) check your cooling water - what is the color? Is there a lot of rust and dirt in it? If YES then drain it all out and replace with Absolute or SM bonus drinking water kasi pareho lang naman yung dalawa (Thanks to Sir Gerivic for pointing that out).

Monitor your water every 2 days - if it gets very dirty drain again and replace with more SM bonus water until it clears, then replace 1-2 liters every week until clear.

    4) In addition to checking the water quality monitor your water level - you may have a leak from the water pump, radiator or hoses, if the level is low every time you check it, then you definitely have a leak.

Try this test when you 1st start it - pour clean water into it and look to see if it is circulating quickly - if NOT then you may have a water pump problem or a blocked radiator.

    5) If after all this the problem persists, then you probably need a radiator overhaul.

    Hope this helps.

    Sincerely,

    Dusky Lim

PS - please update us as to what happened.

Encountered that problem with the AC also but i have tried everything dati pero ganon parin, its worst lalo na pag traffic and naka on ang AC engine starts to overheat parang hirap ang R2 engine.

    Dear vanich:

I didn't know that the R2 suffers from an overheating problem, that's news to me.

Apparently the WL-31 is infamous for this type of overheating, an acquaintance of mine who owns a Petron and service station kept insisting that it would happen to me.

I remember going to the Paco area and getting stuck in some bad traffic - the engine overheated (almost to the max) with the A/C on.

I kept the A/C off and after that trip checked out my cooling system.

Ultimately I changed the water pump, hoses and had the radiator overhauled (by John Keyser of West ave in QC).

After that and daily monitoring of my water levels before start up I no longer have any kind of overheating problems.

When I dismantled the radiator, more than half of it was blocked by leaves and dog hair (I have a Japanese spitz named Kuto).

The pump was leaking water due to a failed mechanical seal.

Note: do NOT run the engine with LOW water levels - that will automatically KILL your mechanical seal on the water pump and hallelujah - it will leak like a sieve.

That's what made me keep track of my radiator water levels daily - the new water pump cost me Php 3500!!! (Japan).

After it was overhauled by Keyser, all the leaks stopped and the engine temp NEVER goes beyond 1/2 gauge.

I don't use any sort of coolant - just distilled H20 - but I replace at least 1 liter every week to purge out all the dirt.

Maybe there is a problem with your airflow through the radiator - there should be a VERY GOOD seal between it and the A/C condenser and fan or else not enough air will flow to cool it.

The fan should be almost touching the radiator OR have less than 1/4 inch clearance around the shroud.

    Keep us posted.

    Best Regards,

    Dusky Lim

that was my bad experience dati change coolant, pump, bigger radiator i think 3 cores pero di rin nagtagal.Pero much better e try muna nila everything baka maayos rin, para sa akin di kasi ganito ka reliable ang R2 na engine its small for the body of b2200 kaya stressed masyado ang engine especially pag paakyat ang biyahe parati.Pero same parin advice natin sa kanila alagaan lang nila always engine, change oil and avoid na magka overheat talaga.

    *Sir Dusk

Yes known ang R2 engine for overheating and cracked cylinders,di kasi maganda ang internal cooling system compared to other engines, i would advice na in advance replace a bigger radiators for R2 sila.

    Dear Guys:

The last time I had persistent over-heating problems was on my old Galant Sigma. It had a 1600 cc 4G32 engine and I installed high-compression pistons, a sports cam, big valves, headers and twin-downdraft carbs.

During the overhaul to install the pistons, I had the block cleaned in an acid tank which removed ALL the rust and dirt.

It came back to me stripped to bare metal and I immediately covered the water passages to prevent rusting.

I installed a new water pump and had the radiator overhauled.

Nevertheless when you idled in traffic with the A/C on the temp would rise to the limit.

Even the installation of an auxiliary electric fan did NOT stop the over-heating.

In the end I found out that Mitsubishi finally admitted - 25 years AFTER the event that it brought out and sold engines that were prone to overheating!!!

If that's the case then there's really very little you can do about it.

As a last resort, to prevent boil-over (dangerous because it will cause distortion and seizing) you can add 50% ethylene glycol to your cooling water.

    Regards,

    Dusky Lim

    Dear Guys:

I got the address of the HID supplier from chinesecarebear, akala ko mura sila, in fact my understanding was that mga Php 1500 to 2000 for the set.

Lo and behold, pag-tawag ko, pinakamura na ibinebenta niyang systema 35 watt, ay Php 4700!!!

    Wow!!! tayo balahibo ko duon.

How much did you guys get your HID system?

    Dusky

Hmmm...interesting topic on the overheating. I will have to disagree with the statement that the R2 is prone to overheating though. My truck has not had any overheating problems since the time we got it in 1990. In fact i was actually scared before because I thought it was not working in the proper operating temp as the needle would just go a little past the minimum line and less than half mark even during traffic with ac on. I do not even have an aux fan and use only tap H20 in the radiator. However, i have replaced the water pump sometime in 2006. The R2 is a sturdy enough engine, and with the proper tlc will be a reliable truck for many years. Medyo mabagal lang talaga, but then again, it is a pick up truck.
