I believe this is always ON and you only turn it OFF when you are absolutely sure that you can anticipate the action in such a way that you have an excellent control of the car.
Are you sure you didn't press on the traction control off button by accident?
Try pressing on the traction control off button multiple times. If the indicator light remains on, that means the traction control is not activated and could mean something else, probably a faulty button or there's something wrong with the traction control.
it appeared again kanina while i was heading home. when i reached our house i turned off the car for a few minutes then switched it back on, reversed the car for a few meters and drove it forward.. and voila the TCS indicator turned off... this is weird.

For old cars (probably those made before E10 became mandatory) there may be some adverse effects with the fuel distribution system but for modern cars no serious concern.
