Having started my own family (late na po ko nag-asawa, as in last March lang at 39 yrs of age) I was contemplating on buying an SUV but noticed Carnival/Sedona. So, i'm giving it a serious thought, i have been reading reviews mostly from australia or US and I find it puzzling that it seems that I only read good things about the carnival in this thread. The reviews from other countries are mostly negative (as in bad). Most of the problems with the Carnival come out at 100K mileage like engine breakdowns and other serious stuff. I have my eye on a carnival being sold and it said that its a 2006 model 2.9 turbo. Now tell me, do i have anything to worry about? I will be getting a loan to buy it and I would really like to get my moneys worth.

    hi tankerpipes,
get the details ng 2006 carnival. is it the local version or imported version?
    ilan na mileage?
i have an 2004 sedona local version, so far ok naman sya and very comfortable yung ride, especially that i use it for long drive trips.
malaki nga lang ang turning radius nya and yung sliding door handle is madaling mag break lalo na pag di alam ng nag-oopen at nagsasara coz may safety lock sya. minsan nabibigla ng mga passengers.
so far, ok yung ride and handling, very smooth unlike ng ibang vans and your kids will love it. mine has captain seats sa 1st and 2nd row.

try to look din yung lumabas ba sedona gold, yun ang unang crdi na lumabas ng carnival/sedona prior to the new one na naka display sa mga KIA centers. i believe meron sa pampanga since ang dami na ng koreans dun.

    good luck on your hunting!

    regards.

    tankerpipes,

get the sedona, kahit na mahal ng konti sa gen1 carnival. you'll be better off with it. because most of the problems that plagued the gen1 was solved when they released the sedona.

    Soluna,

Sorry, over a month ako hindi naglog in sa tsikot forums. Upgrading your alternator's capacity is not the solution. If your alternator's upgraded to 110amps, pero your battery is still small, the alternator will be forced to work more often because the battery needs to be recharged more often. That's the reason why magshorten ang life span ng alternator, and its usually the IC that goes first.

I will check with my local supplier (in Cebu) kung sino yung contact nila sa Manila for the compact SMF100 batteries. Check ko rin kung magkano dito. I tried to purchase one for Diesoline, pero the problem, dapat ipadala by boat, bawal pala ipa airfreight. I offered it to Diesoline before na dadalhin ko sa manila on one of my trips, bawal pala.

    Greetings folks.

Apologies for the delay. I've finished scanning the J3/KV6 manual, that Jabr kindly provided, few months ago. But stuff got in the way and a really bad argument with Globe Broadband resulted in loss of DSL for almost a month.

The manual is mostly about engine/transmission/fuel system and I have packaged it into 7 unrelated groups to get under Yahoo Mail's 10 MB limit.

It was scanned at 150 dpi and saved in JPEG with quality set to 'low', best compromise I can come up between file size and resolution. On my Mac, I can zoom in about 6 times before it starts getting all blocky.

Please PM your e-mail and as soon as I get enough interested parties, I'll send it out.

    hello mga sirs,
ask ko lang po kung normal ba na kapag naka ilaw ung panel pati ung aircon, tpos pag bubuksan ung pintuan sa driver side, sabay namamatay ung ilaw sa panel pati ung sa ilaw ng aircon..experience ko lang a while ago coming from the church, mejo madilim na kasi kaya i switched on the lights.then pagdating sa harap ng bahay, napansin ko pag bukas ko ng pinto, sabay nawala ung mga ilaw ng panel at sa aircon.naisip ko baka accident lang ung pagpatay ng ilaw after opening the driver side door.but i tried it twice, thrice, but the same result.what can be the cause of this.patulong naman mga sirs.TIA.....

benchph1, 35 ang max nakalagay sa tire sidewall. So ganun, di pwede mag 38? Your dunlop has higher max psi sa sidewall?

Sa tingin ko dapat mong sundin yon. or else posibleng maka-experience ka ng tire blowout.
yung standard issue hankook mileage plus pa rin ang nakakabit sa carnival namin. 35 psi din ang max.

published in Philippine Star today, march 24, 2004. Kia Sedona Van 2902 cc displacement manual 13.214 km/liter. Department of Enegery in partnershipwith Total Phils recently conducted its biggest fuel economy run. The route was from DOE compound in Taguig, to Lipa City Batangas then back to Manila. 170 kms total, 2 passengers per vehicle, max speed 80kph, closed windows with aircon on with thermostat at medium setting, headlights and hazard lights on. So yung 15-17, and even 20 km/liter, hanep yun. Baka nga may na overlook isang resibo?

    Altec,

Here is my latest mileage story. It not yet complete because may laman pa yung tank. I went to mariveles for a project and spent three weeks there. I topped the tank and proceeded to head north in the 7:00am at ortigas (picked up another engineer).

We hit the toll gate a 7:15am. The road was clear so we were averaging 120kph. After a few exits the road was wide and my foot began to feel heavy. There was one stretch I sustain 160kph for almost 5 mins. Man what a feeling. This was the first time that I subjected my carnival for such sustained high rpm run. Mind you I wanted to go higher but slower traffic prevented my from reaching higher speeds.

We exited at San fernando reached Mariveles by 8:50am. I forgot to look at the odo (estimated mileage 160km). The rest of the three weeks was short drives from our apartment to the eport processing zone. Upon my return I filled up at a petron station in bataan (mileage 468km). The pump registered 47.5 liters. So my mileage was 9.852km/li. Grabe pala lumamon pag above 3k rpm!!!!!

So upon hitting nlex I got hit by traffic and slowed down my cruising to an average of 90kph. I'll update you on the latest mileage when I topped up this afternoon.

    ALTEC,
Sundin mo lang specs ng gulong sa tire pressure. If u overpressure it heat will soon build up and will cause a tire blowout for sure. Esp if Korean made ang tires mo.

sync3, to be sure, I set my cold tire pressure at 34 psi only.
rodski, during the holy week, I logged over 270 kms. My fuel economy came out to 9.6km/li, fully loaded ako, kept my speed at max 100km, but most of the time at 80-90 lang.

I filled up my thank yesterday evening, 39.448 li and the odo meter is 898.6km. Subtracting the last odo reading in bataan petron station of 468km I get the difference of 430.6km. I divided it with the 39.448li and I get 10.915km/li.

In this particular run I only spent one day of highway (southbound NLEX) and got hit by heavy bumper to bumper traffic upon entering manila April 6. The rest of the holy week was spent doing short drives to the churches and malls of alabang. So mixed yung performance data ko with highway and urban driving. - 1 day highway 6 days urban.

So I still almost get the 11km/li performance sa urban driving. As for the 15 to 17km/li sa highway, I'll need to do another run and this time monitor the odo and pump intake.

Notice ko lang talaga par mabigat ang paa, lalamon ng malakas. This driving was not having economy in mind. So that was the result.

    Happy motoring.

guys binuksan ko yung intake manifold as altec said. grabe ang accumulation ng gunk! tsk tsk tsk.para siyang asphalt in texture and composition. tinanggal ko lang ung maabot ng kamay ko. nag improve ang throttle response at nabawasan ang smoke belching

    Bench 1,

Thats the one I was talking about. I wrote to kia about this problem and I'm still waiting for their reply.

I cleaned this last month before I went to Bataan. After the trip to bataan, I checked it again and I saw an accumulation of about 1mm thick of gunk.

My analysis is that when you do high speed runs, oil is vaporized and goes to the post Air filter hose (before turbo intake). If you checked the intercooler traces of this vaporized oil is visible so I also cleaned it with soap and warm water.

Vaporized oil is not a problem, however, when it mixes with the EGR (pipe from exhaust manifold to the intake manifold), it mixes with the grayish black dust and forms the gunk.

So to prevent this accumuation we must do the ff:

    - use good oil and change regularly.
    - use low sulfur diesel and mix with bio diesel - to prevent grayish black dust.

another option is to put a filter between the hose that goes from the valve cover to the post air filter pipe. The purpose is to catch the vaporize oil. The pipe's purpose is to relieve crankcase pressure and vent it to the intake manifold to be burned. So catching it would not affect the engines performance.

I'll inform you what the kia guys in Korea have to say.

I'm trying to find a way to clean the EGR pipe. Like the exhaust pipe the dust accumulation thickens. Normally putting water in the tail pipe cleans the exhaust pipe. As for the EGR we have to remove the pipe and clean it.

    rodski,

currently im using petron rev-x all terrain tapos change oil every 10t kms.
sa fuel naman almost always shell diesel.
tsaka exhaust pipe cleaning once a month. grabe ang carbon accumulation.. 10 trials yata or more bago mawala ung carbon.

medyo OT: malapit na ko sa 40t km checkup
nakalagay don pati daw differential oil papaltan...panung ginawa mo dun?

    Bench 1,

Hindi pinalitan ng signet yung transmission oil ko the last time I had it serviced at 40K. I think I 'll drain this on my next service schedule and replace it with synthetic transmission oil.

As for the differential, since FWD yung carnival the differential is part of the transmission - the tranny oil takes care of that. However, for differential scheduled maintanance, repacking of the grease and checking of the bearings (inner outer), axle boot etc. parang FWD na compact cars ang dapat gawin.

rodski, yung sa akin, 9K+ pa, pero I noticed grabe ang smoke belching niya when I hit the gas pedal when overtaking. Di ko pa na roadtest from the casa today paglabas niya, they just adjusted it. Will bring it back kasi yung ceiling mount monitor ko, nasira, ayaw nila pa-claim sa warranty kasi wear and tear daw. #$%, 10 months old pa lang ang kotse ko, wear and tear na, (of course, mga bata ang open/close ng overhead monitor). The bad thing is, lalong lumuwag ang monitor when they tried to devcon(yun daw ginawa nila) sa plastic part sa may hinge portion. Lumalabas na ba ang pagkabobo ng kia casa techs?

    Altec,

Palinis mo yung intake manifold area to reduce smoke belching when doing heavy acceleration. Ang style ko pag overtaking to rev the engine 3 stages. This way I tricked the eccs to make the air/fuel mixture until such time the the turbo boost is enough to force more air in the combustion. The smoke will occur dahil sobra yung fuel versus air pag hindi pa nag kick and turbo boost at 2000rpm. Notice mo nang yayari yung smoke belching effect pag below 2000rpm yung state ng car tapos i-floor mo yung accelerator.

However, when cruising at around 80kph tapos i-floor mo walang usok.

I also helps that when you clean the exhaust system by putting water in the tail pipe and flushing it out by reving the engine. Pag madalas ang car sa stop and go traffic soot accumulates thats why its healthy to go cruising once a month to clean out the soot.

Sorry to hear about the lcd monitor. My car did come equipped with it when I bought it. Audiovox yata ang gamit ng kia. I recta mo nalang sa audiovox mas alam nila yan.

nakapagpalinis na ba kayo ng intake manifold nyo? san pwede ipalinis? ayokong pakialam yon baka me masira.

another Q: di ba ang Oil Filter ng Starex at Carnival iisa? Mobis ang tatak.
