Just put in reliable tires like Bridgestones, Yoks, or Dunlop if it has Korean tires stock. Change the oil and service regularly and it'll serve you well.
On the K&N filters, if the 4.4K includes the adaptor, thats OK already.
tnx for the tips vinj.
but what does the adaptor look like?
have any of you guys installed 16" rims on your rides? planning to do that kc when i will upgrade tires and i need feedback.
i went to urdaneta, pangasinan yesterday. on the flats, early afternoon and with regular highway traffic, the carnival did 63.6 kms on 3.1 liters of shell diesoline ultra. that's more than 20km per liter!
boy was i floored!!
will monitor my nightime highway drive next time. bka pwede umasungot sa isuzu challenge... hehehe!
when i got to the shell rosario, la union service station i got myself a full tank of crude. after that i proceeded to urdaneta, pangasinan. i was just doing easy driving that hot afternoon and got stuck for about ten minutes in the notorious urdaneta traffic. my carnival's an a/t pala and i drove with the a/c on. on the way back to baguio several hours later, i filled her up again just to check the consumption.
pero sana same gasoline station and same fuel pump and same time of the day para po mas accurate ang computation ng consumption..
Carnival peeps must watch out for the accumulation of gunk in your intake manifold. I checked mine and found a generous amount of this material. Just remove the intercooler hose to the intake manifold and you can see the gunk. My carnival has traveled 42K km and 2 1/2 years old na. Walang usok pero ito and sanhi ng pag usok pag kumapal ito so much so na block na and intake ports to the combustion chamber.
From my observation the gunk formed when oil from the valve cover gets mixed with the EGR. Malagkit siya na malambot. To clean this I had to use my hands. But I couldn't reach the deeper portions of the intake manifold.
Question how do we maintain it to be clean? This gunk will form because no diesel is sprayed in the intake manifold to dilute it and burn in the combustion - direct injection kasi. I used low sulfur diesel only when it was available so I suspect this deposits were formed using the old diesel. Yung additive kong nilalagay ay for fuel injector cleaners once every two months. That only cleans the injectors. Not on the manifold.
The hose I am refering to is the the coming out of the intercooler turbo going to the intake manifold. If you are standing in front of the car, it is the hose on the bottom side of the intercooler.
Same engine tayo so its easy to find. To accesss the removal of the gunk.
1. remove that air filter intake (two screws and a clamp)
2. remove intercooler assembly. four screws para sa black plastic cover and 4 screws para sa intercooler itself. and two clamps for the hoses.
3. remove the intake manifold adapter (4 screws) round to square yung shape and two wires.
I did not use any solvent to clean it because it might enter the combustion chamber. Manual cleaning lang ang nagawa ko. I'm still thinking of how to do it without manual cleaning.
to re-assemble reverse the order. linisin mo na rin yung plastic valve cover kasi hindi abot ng engine wash yon.
benchph1, I agree that minivans have more body roll compared to sedans or other autos. But the body roll I mentioned is comparing with other minivans. I personally have driven a dodge caravan when I was in the US back in 97, then my brother-in-law's imported previa in 2000, another imported previa (same model as the current previa) in 2003, then another surplus previa in 2004, and they have less body roll than the sedona. Yun din sabi ng consumer report magazine on the sedona, that it has more body roll than the other minivans. Yun lang, I am not bitching about the body roll (kasi I own a Sedona na rin) to the point where I am a negative critic of our car (it's a great car, by the way, like I said before), comment lang yun. But ok na ok yung strut bar na yan. Maybe some importer or spare part shop should carry that and offer to us sedona/carnival owners!
About the fuel economy, tanong ko lang how you were able to get those fuel economy- 20 sa north luzon, then 15-17 sa highway sa unit ni rodski. Nakakahiya tuloy, mukhang mabigat ang paa ko coz when I was breaking in my sedona and drove it in the highway back and forth to the city and logged 250 kms, I got only 10!
I noticed also that when I got the car brand new, ang tahimik ng diesel engine niya. Now, my car has logged 8000km, but I noticed a few thousand km ago, may whining sound na siya as the rpm goes up. Have you noticed this with your unit? Mine's a 2003 sedona LS M/T.
By the way, what happened with the air bag assembly that was claimed under warranty?

The carnival/sedona is a very good car indeed. However, to get good mileage one has to be practice good driving habits and proper maintenance. In City driving I get 11km/li because I anticipate the driving conditions. One good example is when I see a red light before I reach the intersection I coast the car. When the cabin condition is cool I normally turn off the AC switch and turn it on when I feel a change in temperature (my AC system's thermostat was disabled). When I'm nearing my destination I turn off the AC switch.
On highway driving I stick to one lane and gradually increase speed when there is open space. When above 120kph I turn off the AC and open the fresh air in. Nobody can sustain prolong 160kph in our high way so when I get below 120kph, I switch on the AC.
As for maintenance, during warranty I religously change oil every 5k kms. Only when My warranty expired did I switch to synthetic oil and change the interval to 10k km. Fuel injector cleaner additive once every two months. Air filter every 15k km. Fuel filter every 20K km. Good tire inflation, and rotation every 10k km. alignment check every 6 months.
altec, actually our carnival was bought 2nd hand..it already had 20t kms in the odo when we got it..the previous owner replaced the rear shocks with rancho 5000's .....maybe that's why im not experiencing that much body roll :D bout the air bag, they replaced the whole assembly..i didn't see them do it, but at least the warning light isn't coming on anymore.
Thanks! Will monitor my fuel economy again. Right now, I am still under warranty so I follow their 5K schedule. Mahina ako gumamit ng sedona ko, 8 months old 8K pa ang mileage so only experienced their 1K and 5k PMS. Tanong ko lang. What's your tire inflation? I set it at 32 cold pressure, ok lang ba? Pero even at 32 and looking at the tire, parang under inflated pa rin.
The nearest they have is 195. dapat talaga 205.
Altec, Rodski, and all others: its already 3am and i have been reading your threads regarding the KIA Carnival/Sedona. The thing is for the past couple of weeks I have been searching what automobile I will be buying. This will be the first time for me to own one and I want to make the right choice. Having started my own family (late na po ko nag-asawa, as in last March lang at 39 yrs of age) I was contemplating on buying an SUV but noticed Carnival/Sedona. So, i'm giving it a serious thought, i have been reading reviews mostly from australia or US and I find it puzzling that it seems that I only read good things about the carnival in this thread. The reviews from other countries are mostly negative (as in bad). Most of the problems with the Carnival come out at 100K mileage like engine breakdowns and other serious stuff. I have my eye on a carnival being sold and it said that its a 2006 model 2.9 turbo. Now tell me, do i have anything to worry about? I will be getting a loan to buy it and I would really like to get my moneys worth.
