v22,

i got my 99 besta brand new from a local dealer... problem number one wheel alinement lagi may kabig to the left.
2. after 2 years putok na alternator at mahina na aircon kahit bagong service
3. mahina suspension parts. madaling masira mga door handles, rust has started to eat the rear tailgate

4. rubber moulding sa windows at doors shrinked na

5. 3rd year yung ignition contact yung sinususian sira na rin.

6. every 4 or 5 month my fusible links keep on burning out. just change it and it will last for another 4 to 5 months

7. 4th year with out any symptoms it just overheated in the middle of SLEX. after that mausok na kahit anong gawin ng mekaniko usok na talga. malamang change engine na ito

8. just had the starter changed a few days ago 7k for brand new, 4500 for a recon unit, recon n lang.

all in all what i went thru with our besta, i';d still go for a 2nd hand unit na local na Hi-ace grandia body.

the only BEST thing about the BESTA is kahit gitgitan kayo ok lang nothing to lose na eh...hehehe....

Got me a '99 Besta also. EST (top of the line) trim level pero 2.2 engine lang.

Good experience naman. Post na lang ako later. But I'd get an old Hi-Ace or a later model Hyundai Grace over it.

hmmm.. karamihan ng mga posts parang damn if you do damn if you dont..

pinsan ko bought a brand new besta van 'bout '98..the intention was family-cum-for hire usage..got a not so encouraging comment from my wife after experiencing a ride on it..parang maiiwan daw 'yong puwitan ng van habang tumatakbo..?! weird..

ewan kolang sa maintenance..but the tag price dont cost much upfront..lalo na pag segunda mano..

The old Grace would be a safer choice. It's a rebadged Mitsu L300 Exceed.

The Besta is a Ford/Mazda/Kia van.

i bought a brand new besta 2.7 est all power in 1996. i sold it in 2005, with some regret. at first, it was freezing cool inside. then, it slowly became warmer... and the compressor/clutch is a one-unit construction. $$$! and the accessory fan was easily wet and dirtied due to its low location...
the most important lesson i learned, is that the koreans then had lousy rubber.
1. the first to go were the four tires, 1 month after warranty lapsed. one after the other, parang engineered to fail. lahat nag-oblong. i switched to local tires. ok na.
2. the fuel line. terrible fuel mileage because of three inches of rubber hose hiding under the engine well bracket. took me some time to look for the fuel leak.
3. door rubber, window rubber. i think they're relatives of shrink-fit plastic! kaya siguro mahina ang aircon. but no water leaks!
4. brake master cylinder rubber. failed within 3 years.
5. clutch master cylinder rubber. failed within 5 years.
6. rubber bushes and mounts of the handbrake mechanism near the banjo. went mushy...
then the others:
7. small capacity radiator. "overheating" . but then, it might have been my fault. i disregarded the synthetic coolant, using plain water only. but everything went ok after i changed the radiator core to a larger capacity one.
8. brittle plastic door handes. but hey, replacement was so cheap i couldn't blame it too much.
9. wiring harness. wires too thin. mine burned out and i had it replaced using bigger capacity wires. ok na.
10. the engine fanblade assembly! again the rubber! i found out it was a two-piece construction the hard way. but replacement was cheap...
11. suspension metal. whenever something needed replacement, i used mazdas.
12. the clutch pedal became sooo deliciously soft when i had the kia clutch assembly replaced using mazda's.
13. the tailgate door stabilizer. first time in my life i had to ever replace one. (and we have many vehicles)
14. the tailgate door lock assembly. parang lata ng darigold! at napakahirap pang ma-access.
15. the battery! alanganin na ang size, napakamahal pa! (pang-chedeng). i finally just got a 2smf.
enough bashing! now, what are the good points?
1. driver's seat is very comfortable. talong talo ang l300. except for the engine heat; solved it by getting a small fan... and the engine isn't that noisy.
2. it's a pleasure to drive. no tricks or acrobatics needed. high visibility.
3. cockpit control ergonomics are good.
4. parts are cheap and easily available.
5. lots of passenger and luggage space.
6. high ground clearance. until i found out the air cleaner intake was just under the driver's feet...
8. good radio.
but i finally sold it, to make way for my innova. the boys didn't need baby equipment anymore. i didn't need lots of luggage space. and i want the engine to be infront of me now. but if the guy i sold it to, sells it back to me now, i may just buy it back. it's a nice workhorse.

We have 1996 model 2.7 besta local, so far up to know hindi naman nagbigay ng headache sa amin. we used it for school service ng mga bata at isa lang ang major repalcement ang ginawa namin sa rear a/c pinalitan namin ng yokohama type at na-solve na ang problem sa a/c. Major repalcement wala pa naman. this is also the same with my kia pregio. Siguro all we need is proper knowledge and idea how to maintain it, kung marunong lang magdrive at hindi marunong makiramdam sa sasakyan then kahit anu pang car yan it will break down talaga.

either hyundai or besta is a good choice.

Reading the reviews here parang nagdalawang isip ako kung bibilhin pa ba naming o hindi… Scary!!!

we had a kia besta 97 EST 2.7 timing gear engine nabili namin nung 2000 then na benta after almost 6 years of use.. sulit talaga .. 2nd hand na yung van kaya nilinis at ni restore namin for 3 days.. after cleaning parang bago na ulet.. all original wala modifications kaya ayos na ayos..

mga naging sira pero kayang ayusin..

crankshaft pulley (nag replace kami 2x first replace year 2001 and replace again after 5 years)
aircon clutch (napapalitan naman yung clutch lang not the whole assembly)
rack end and tie rods (replaces DRECO brand matibay.. pangit yung 555 hindi kaya yung bigat ng besta..
wheel alignment (can be done using 3D alignment service.. ok naman walang kabig at upod ng gulong)
aircon malamig kahit sa likot nagpalit lang ng malaking fan at syempre yung occasional aircon cleaning (which i think is normal on old vehicles) change din ng cooling coils after 3 years
water pump change after 5years of our use..
yung radiator medyo maliit talaga for our country changing it to a larger one will do the trick
power steering leak after 3 years of our use.. changed with repair kit ok na ulet wala na leaks.

aside from that wala na.. hindi pumuputok fuse,
braking power malakas at stable
pang ilalim mga bushing at shocks matibay at hindi nasira in 6 years of our use malalaki naman pang ilalim kaya matibay..
maganda suspension not too soft not too hard..
good seating arrangement.. (we had our first row seat changed to a 3 seater)

hayy salamat buti my nagreply akala ko ghost topic na eto... malaki talga naitutulong ng mga feed back.
1st tym buyer and user kasi kami ng van kaya nagdadalawang isip mom ko if okay ba bilhin ung van.
2nd wala talaga kami masyado alam wen it comes to car etc, kung ano sasabihin ng myari we believe in kaya siguro comportable kami na bilhin ung kay ex kasi his a mechanical engr.
3rd wala rin kami kakilalang trusted mechanics here sa manila, tipong nanga2pa talaga kami kaya its a big risk for us to buy this .

* dr.d > nasa negros po kasi ung van, i dunno if ders any interested party to buy it kasi dey still need to pay the transportation from negros down here sa manila. around 10k or more kasi ung bayad, unless someone from this forum knw or can recommend a cheaper transpo.

general question na lang po >> since 3rd hand user na kami ng van, how much po dapat ang reasonable price pag binili namin siya? and what should be the abc that we need to know sa isang car before closing the deal?
tanx
