    Hi Rheas,

Welcome to Tsikot.com. Hope you enjoy your stay here and be a regular. I own a 98 trooper TDIC. IMO it has a very reliable and sturdy engine, the 4jg2. Fuel consumption is fair at around 7.5km/Litr (city driving) and 14km/litr (highway driving). Engine power is more than adequate.

Yes parts are a bit pricey but they are very durable. We haven't replaced any suspension parts yet since we bought it. I just had my bearings repacked and ok na.

if you have other questions, just PM me or NIWDE. We'd be glad to help you.

    Happy Hunting!!!

The 1998 4jg2 engine is not yet CRDI. I think they incorporated the CRDI technology in the 4jx1 engine. Ok sana ang CRDI but I've heard of engine problems due to fuel impurities here in the Phils.

Puros converted models lang ang nakikita ko na 4jg2. Ganda kasi ng engine. Ako I'm very satisfied with mine. Yung kay kimpoy, facelifted kasi. And one of the reasons why mabilis nabili, package yata yun..kasama siya!! hehe.

try to test drive it muna to get a feel for it, things to look for: aircon, medyo mahina(or baka yung akin lang), medyo maalon ang ride, dashboard rattle, akward rear aircon switch.....some parts are interchangeable with the 4x4 fuego like brake pads, etc.....

    djerms: service manual ko......

Mam Rhea, go for it. Of course, you must check the condition of the vehicle. Ask for service record to see if it is well maintain. Or, bring a mechanic that you can trust when you examine the vehicle. Here is the link to a site that will help you evaluate your target vehicle especially the article on Buying a Used Car: http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/car_care

The Trooper is a very powerful, durable, dependable, and reliable SUV. You will not be left behind with it. The 1998 Trooper is likely to have a 4JG2 engine. The engine is very durable. In UK, they manage to achieve 300,000 km with it and still doing well virtually smoke free. The owner claims that he can still easily achieve 250,000 km more before the engine may need to be rebuilt (overhauled). They call this engine bombproof to emphasize its durability and reliability. One Tsikoter here owns a 1999 Trooper which has the same 4JG2 engine as your target ride. His vehicle already accumulated around 122,000 km but only have 0.34% opacity at his last emission test. The passing rate for diesel engines is 2.5%. Guys, please correct me if I am wrong. The opacity is a test parameter for the smoke emitted by a vehicle.

A 1998-1999 Trooper with 60,000km kilometerage sells for around P900K more or less. A higher kilometerage, one with 100,000km may sell for P800K. This are the selling price for the local Trooper. Many people prefer the local Trooper because it is already left hand drive unlike the imported ones where it had to be converted first before it is legally usable here in PH.

It is of course preferable to buy the one with lower kilometerage and local because you will have more peace of mind and less maintenance expenses. But even the one with higher kilometerage would still be reliable provided you follow the recommended PMS (preventive maintenance schedule). The PMS is design to keep your ride in good condition because no matter how strong and durable a vehicle is, it is still subject to wear and tear. It is strongly recommended to replace any worn-out parts immediately. Do not wait until it breaks down. This way you avoid the hassle and the expense of a major repair. If your ride already have 60,000-100,000 km, the manufacturer recommends that you replace the engine belt. repacked the axle bearings, drain and replace the brake, clutch, and power steeing fluid. It is also recommended to drain and replace the LSD (Limited Slip Differential) and Transmission fluid.

Welcome to the club of satisfied Trooper owners!

    tama kayong lahat...
nabenta na ang trooper ko...but with a heavy heart...

engine performance the 125hp 4JG2 is apt already, dashboard rattles can be remedied easily, the "maalon ride" is subjective but aftermarket shocks can cure that and about the rear aircon switch, just leave it open.

now if you ask me if i would buy a 4JG2 Trooper again if given a chance...my answer would be Yes...

    OT: bro ano palit mo?

    benny010;
4jg2= non-crdi; gear driven, 125hp, mineral oil pwede, cheaper parts.
4jx1= crdi engine; timing belt driven; 160hp; sythetic oil only(i think).
