Our Trooper is a '97 model 3.1 liter intercooled turbo diesel. I forgot the engine designation. The manual specifies an API CD oil. For SAE viscosity it specifies either SAE 40 (monograde) or 20W-50, 15W-40 or 10W-40 (multigrade) oil which fits our warm climate. We currently use the Castrol GTD 15W-40 API CF-4. Smooth and quiet naman operation ng engine with very minimal oil consumption. It's not like our previous Shell Rimula X or Petron Rev-X Trekker (Both API CH-4 and 15W-40) which we used where the engine consumes much oil. :D
Isuzu 4JX1-T 3.0 Turbo diesel- manual specifies 5w30 or 10w30, Api CD oil. Have used isuzu's Besco 10w30, Mobil delvac 1-5w40 CH4, Petron 5w30 full synth CF4.
pinoy99,
What oils do you use over there? Have you tried mobil 1- 10w30 in a gas or diesel trooper?
I've used Castrol, Mobil, Exxon, Pennzoil, Valvoline, even some generic brands, in both dino and synthetic form. Yes, I've used Mobil1 10w30 on occasions. I think I used that oil on my long drives from Jersey to Colorado and Florida since it can handle longer drain interval. Unfortunately, there are no diesel Troopers here since the early 90's but there are a lot of diesel oil. Delvac, Delo(Chevron), Rotella(Shell) to name a few which are all rated 'fleet oil' which means they can be used in gas motors as well.
I am surprised that your manual specifies 5w30 at all considering as Roydok pointed out, the warm(hot) climate there. Even the 10w30 might be too thin;15w40 seems to be the better grade considering the heat/traffic. Maybe Isuzu did it for fuel economy and pollution reasons? What year is the truck?
Roydok and Jackaroo, any difference in the sump capacity for the 3.0 and 3.1 motors?
pinoy99,
The 4JX1 engine(introduced in 99 til present) uses a common rail injection system that is pressurized by the oil which has to be thin enough to flow into the system when cold- it even has a separate oil filter for the injection system.
I've seen 15w40 oil used in this engine, it caused hard starting, low power and a lot of smoke. I'm comfortable with 5w30/10w30 oil in our weather as long as it's synthetic.
The 3.1L is a 4JG2-T that uses conventional diesel oil grades. The sump capacity is 6L. The 4JX1 uses 7.5L.
How long a drain interval did you try on mobil 1? What engine?
Interesting, it shows how much I know about diesel motors  What's the hp/torque and mileage ratings for both? 8 quarts synthetic = $$$ tho, eh? What is the recomended drain interval?
It's the v6 dohc 3.5L gas motor 215hp/235 ft/lb torque, the only one available for Troopers 98+. Guesstimate is close to 5k miles in two weeks; includes days of continuous highway miles and a few hours of off-road stuff in Colorado in the middle of summer.
The 3.0Td has 160hp/245ft/lb torque, don't have figures for 3.1L. Mileage on the 3.0L is about 6km/L city and 9km/L hway. The local synthetic costs about $5/L and can last for 10k km between changes. (i've confirmed this in used oil tests)
I have a friend that uses Mobil 1 5w50 in a diesel engine, keeps it in for 10K km, and the engine still runs like new after 80K km!:o
In my next oil change, (around September), I'll be using Castrol Elixion fully synthetic diesel engine oil, 5W-30 multigrade, API CI-4 and Global DHD-1 service categories. This is the website:
Got 2 gallons, courtesy of a balikbayan friend; just enough for one charge in my 2001 Trooper. Will probably keep this oil for one year or 10K whichever comes first, with a filter change in between. This oil could have been great for our rigs if it has JASO DH-1 service category; maybe Castrol will reformulate in the future to consider Japanese engines.
Will keep this forum posted on my future observations on engine performance.
By the way jackaroo, where did you have the used oil test performed? How much did it cost you?
Thanks for the info. It appears that the charge for the UOA by Petron is pretty steep considering that the results only gave TBN, Visc * 40, Visc * 100, VI, and insolubles.
You guessed it right, I visited several forums including the "overlander", but have not been there lately. The current forum I am frequently visiting is that of "BobIsTheOilGuys", which specializes on engine oils, gear oils, transmission oils, and etc. Very informative indeed.
At present, my Trooper's engine oil is Shell Rotella T, 10W-30 multigrade, API CH-4 service category. Comes September, this will be changed with Castrol Elixion.
I'd rather have an oil-change than let Petron do a UOA for me! The 4JX1, I think would be better-off with it.
Sorry, I jumped the gun; the dino Rotella T multigrade 10W-30 is not locally available. I got mine from a balikbayan friend.
Revisited the Mobil site, and what I found is I think, one of the best dino oils for our 4JX1 engines. I am referring to the Mobil 1300 Super 10W-30 as described in this page:
This 10W-30 is already certified for API CI-4 and JASO DH-1 service categories! This will provide great service to our 4JX1 which is fitted with an EGR and is designed/manufactured in Japan. IF ONLY THIS OIL IS AVAILABLE HERE.................
