Has anyone of you replaced your timing gear assembly? Last March, that sound that I have been hearing ever since was starting to get really louder to the point of getting really annoying.
I brought it to Isuzu Commonwealth. After 1 day, they informed me that it was the water pump that needs replacing since most of the time when that sound appears, most likely the culprit is the water pump. So they replaced the water pump. Brought it home with no problem. But later that night, I heard that sound again. I informed the dealer and they said to bring it back and possibly to leave the car for further observation.
On the day that I brought it, they said that I should come with them when they test drive so that I could tell them when that sound appears. 2 mechanics were with me on the test drive and lucky for me, just a few hundred kilometers from the dealership, that sound emanated already. So I am 100% sure that 2 mechanics heard it and they agreed with me that the sound isn't normal. I removed the face of the radio so they can't use it. I am afraid that the reason why they didn't hear it before was because the radio was quite loud.
To my shock, they said that they fear it's the turbo and it freakin' costs 180k!!! They said the sound is coming from something that is rotating. I told them to make sure coz I have no plans in spending 180k for a freaking turbo and then when the car is released, the sound is still there. The car stayed in the dealership for a week.
After a week, they have finally concluded that it is coming from the timing gear and they need to replace the timing gear assembly which costs 22k. Unlucky for me, they don't have that part and they have to order it. They said that I could still use the car but just drive it within city limits coz when I bring it to somewhere far, the chances of that part to break is greater since the driving is more high speed.
I deposited 2k just to make sure that I will really buy that part. Deposited it last April 1. 25 days later, the part is still not yet available.
So, fellow Dmaxers, has anyone of you ever replaced your timing gear assembly? It's so annoying that when we bought the Dmax, they were bragging about the timing gear being superior to a timing belt since the chances of it breaking is lesser. But the truck hasn't even reached 80k kms and yet it has to be replaced already coz it was already producing that whining and buzzing noise. That is even worse than a timing belt. Then now I can't bring it outside the city not until they have already replaced that part which God only knows when it will become available.

So far Sir rna800, your case is unique to us.
Our 2008 D-max M/T at 81,400 km odo, old 2004 D-max M/T at 311,500 km odo, and also old 2003 Crosswind XT at now plus-plus-plus 350,000 km odo (the odo stopped metering at plus 350,000 km) so far had no problems with the stainless timing chain-and-gear.
Are you past your warranty already?

April 27th, 2013 09:49 AM #1213Yes sir, it has passed its warranty already, 5 yrs old on July. I love my Dmax, it has served us well but I am wondering why those parts need to be replaced so early. Imagine the SCV, EGR, though it was remedied by cleaning and not replacing the EGR, water pump now the timing gear assembly. All of those before even reaching 80k kms.

Magkasing-edad pala D-max mo sir at si 2008 hinDMAXsiado ko. Sakit talaga ng mga D-max natin yang dalawang parts na yan sir sa totoo lang, i.e. any pre-2010 model D-max's EGR's and suction valve ;) Yang EGR natin doesn't use the mechanical-type piston gaya ng Crosswind, kundi electronically-controlled sir....
Re my suction valve, i was just asked by my good contacts at Isuzu if i was experiencing sorta sluggish feel with my D-max and i said "No pare koy, but why you asked? Is there something i should know that you guys wanna talk me through?" ....Then they said that any pre-2010 model D-max came with troublesome suction valves due to the Euro 4 specification that they were designed with, meaning they were meant for clean diesel fuel. And then they even ask me further, "Is your D-max nearing the end of its parts warranty period?" And i said "Yes, in few months time".... They my good contacts told me to just bring my unit and they will justify the replacement without me paying anything hehe....
....And it included also the replacement of my EGR for free that is more adaptable to our Euro 2 fuel supply, hence i got me a new 2010 suction valve and a new 2010 EGR sir ;)
Honestly sir, i would not have known any of these if it were not for these guys from my Isuzu service centre ---- Yup, and that is perhaps also due to the benefits of pakikipag-tao, wika nga hehe.... Though out-of-topic now, but this is how i mingle with the good boys ---- Appreciate them all the time, pat them at the back and ask them how are they, immerse with them in a conversation, bring humour into the conversation, hand them something by saying "Pards, para sa pang-merienda ninyo lahat, pag-pacensiyahan na ninyo, at maraming-maraming salamat sa time ninyo sa pag-gawa, sa uulitin ah, hehe!", and by making oneself approachable all the time.... They would do the same treatment to anyone who's somewhat appreciative of what they do as majority of the people understand what reciprocity is or marunong din silang makiramdam wika nga, just like what i gained for free, which is actually way more than enough ;) ....Also, as always, they are reserving Mobil1 Delvac 5W-40 diesel engine oils for me as a plus

YUP, and it's the first time we heard it from a D-max unit hehe
We are basically an Isuzu brand-infested family haha, and none of this or whatsoever have occurred from our Isuzu's from old Fuego's to Crosswinds to two D-max to 10 wheeler trucks of different generations that have seen more mileage than any cars we've owned.
There must be something wrong with the Isuzu assembly line's QA/QC, though i'm not really privy about what's happening inside the plant, just a guess. Or, from time to time there are lemons so they say.
Nonetheless, not too worried about the D-max into the future as my eyes are laid on the Volkswagen Amarok 2.0 TDi bi-turbo when it arrives. I know that the all-new D-max performs better than the Amarok offroad-wise and fuel efficiency-wise as proven in Australian grounds by body of offroad junkies, but still i want a change and it should be a Folksvagen hehe....
Cheers!

May 2nd, 2013 04:21 PM #1217Yes sir, something is really, really wrong. I even thought it would last longer than a timing belt. I have no idea why they have to replace it this early.
I called today and followed up, they said there is only one part left to be delivered. I asked if there is any chance for it to suddenly snap. They said that the chances of it snapping like a timing belt is very unlikely since it is gear to gear. But the problem is there is that whining and buzzing sound. So if there is any consolation, I am not worried even if I still keep on using it.
But their previous advise lingered on me to not use it outside the city coz chances of some parts breaking are higher due to higher speeds. Sounds pretty ironic to me now since I can use it within city limits but only God knows when those parts will arrive and the chances of it snapping is not that possible BUT I can't bring it far coz the chances of parts breaking is highly likely due to high speeds.
I don't know. But I love my Dmax. No other problems other than that whining and buzzing sound.Last edited by rna800; May 2nd, 2013 at 04:32 PM.

May 2nd, 2013 04:31 PM #1218Yes sir, magkasing edad mga Dmax natin. Kulay nga lang ang pinagkaiba. Blue sa iyo, Red sa akin.hehe
Kahit na nagka problema ako sa SCV noon, at least nung napalitan, ok na ulit. Wala ng problema. Even the EGR, nung nalinis, wala ng problema. Kaso hindi ko sinunod ung Isuzu na palitan ung EGR. I brought it to CDC and had it cleaned. Pwede naman pala linisin lang, bakit ko papapalitan. 20k+ ung EGR, 4k+ lang ung cleaning. Same result din.
Nonetheless, I still love it. At least never pa naman akong itinirik nito or ung tipong biglang nag malfunction sa road. Actually yan nga ang gusto ko dito sa Dmax ko na ito, very simple and walang masyadong gadgets kaya wala din masyadong masisira.hehe Just turn on the engine then ride and drive.

Your D-max is way better-looking though chief. The Tornade Red colour D-max appeals more to me than my Impulse Blue D-max
Sulit talaga mga D-max sir as far as our experience with Isuzu pickups, AUV and trucks goes.... Never had any problems, certainly none of those stainless steel timing chain-and-gear than run them....
....with the exemption of one by the way, the Isuzu Trooper 3.0 with 4JX1-TC engine runs in timing belt ;) ....But we never owned a Trooper....
Cheers!
