Try loosen your kickdown cable (trans throttle cable) a bit... it's a cable connected to your throttle cable then connected to the tranny...

yesterday my 2000 Starex AT 72tkm suddenly overheated.... it has never gone up the mid level of the temp gauge... my driver noticed and he immediately pulled over... ATF entered the coolant overflow tank!!!! had to replace radiator and had the oil cooler thoroughly cleaned.....ATF will be replaced a couple of times too... HASSLE!!!

sir rion, went to sprint in banawe regarding the kickdown cable a while ago, a mechanic there cannnot find it or they do not know exactly were it is. by the way a friend of mine who owns a 1999 Pajero previously experienced an on and off difficulty in shifting. the culprit according to him was the turbo. Can this also be a factor to consider? sorry but am trying to look at all posibilities now.

yes, a bad turbo, low power engine, bad fuel pump etc.. would cause delay upshifts... even a dirty air filter will cause late upshifts... (experienced the air filter cause personaly...)
the hydraulic a/t kasi will think that your power is not sufficent enough to make that upshift... the shifting does not rely only on computer alone but the tranny itself sensing pressure... if that's the case... the tranny thinks your on heavy load...

however, there are other causes of delay upshifts even with a good condition a/t. like overfilled atf, or connections to overdrive control....

I was certain all hydraulic A/T have one... I could be wrong...

but if you can look for yourself, hanapin mo no lang if there is a another cable connected in the accelerator cable. this cable is also connected in the transmission... IF EVER kickdown cable exists... try loosen it to half and test drive it... if nothing happens.. balik mo nalang orig position...
    info on kickdown cable

example pic sa kickdown... non-efi/non-crdi though...

looks will vary but same principle... if accel cable will pull, kickdown cable will pull too...

if you think it's the turbo. have it pressure test sa hyundai service.

Starex had ATF changed a total of four times-- the last was en route to Baguio, in Tarlac. The Baguio drive was very efficient and the engine had no problems at all, power and economy wise. 4 adults 2 kids lotsa bags, nary a whimper. P 2,200.00 round trip was what I spent on fuel all the way from Paranaque.

    This is one good minivan

I had the atf changed about two days ago using the "dialysis" method. they consumed around 15 liters of oil. well i noticed an improvement is the shifting but i guess sooner or later i will need the help of an auto trans specialist to look into it.

Also had same problem before. I had my a/t trans serviced/replaced seals, changed atf spent 8k. But it doesnt work either, pareho pa rin ng hatak, coz its 98 underpowered starex. so I decided to replace it with manual tranny. Actually there are lots of choices that can fit the engine, but if you want the starex tranny * 30K, madali lang magconvert, but with little budget I chose 4dbx tranny yun pang grace * 6800 with crossjoint, flywheel, plus the shifter which is hard to find , so i bought a brandnew at goodgear * 2400+570(x2),surplus pedal, propeller kci shorter yun manual trans, master clutch, slave, pressure plate, clutch disc, copper tubing, flexi hose. Starex 98 had marked slot on the master, amd shifter, kaya you will know where ka magbore to place the master clutch and position of the shifter.
    TOTAL Cost of project= 30K
Kya ngayon ok na hatak and can go fast as I want.
