baket mas mura pag kia, even if several cars share the same platform as their hyundai brethren? it just makes one wonder where they cut costs

Can you cite actual figures to support your observation? What locally released vehicles of Kia and Hyundai share the same platform, and how much do they cost respectively?
Hyundai absorbed Kia a few years back. They're probably lessening the specs of the Kia twins, enabling them to sell cheaper.
kia is supposed to be marketed as value for money cars while hyundai is marketed as more "luxurious".. kasi kung pareho presyo and specs nila eh di parang kinakalaban nila sarili nila! para hindi rin malito ang market..
there are rumors with the introduction of the upcoming codename Hyundai BS luxury sedan, na gagawa ng upscale marque ang Hyundai... something to counter the Lexus of Toyota, Infiniti of Nissan and Acura of Honda... kaya lang, they lacked time to come up of the plan at malapit na lumabas ang BS sedan...kaya they shifted plans... parang ang mangyayari... Hyundai ang magiging upscale brand ng Kia. so, if true, expect more Hyundai models to compete with upscale euro and japs.
Both brands have the same owner. They have staggered pricing so as not to compete with each other.
For a Kia Picanto vs. Getz:
1. Front power windows only on Picanto DLX (manual cranks on base model) while Getz has 4 power windows
2. Rear folding seat of Picanto is of a simpler design and with no head restraint
3. Even for the A/T variant, Kia still uses the 1.1 engine. The Getz A/T is available only in 1.4 engine form.
Mostly in details lang naman. Locally, Kia is more aggressive with promos and discounts, too. Kaya kahit magkalapit ang SRP, you still tend to save more with Kias. Ang Hyundai bumabawi naman sa content.

I read in an article before that the reason why Hyundai vehicles cost more is because they are trying to make their vehicles more upscale than Kia...take for example the all new Kia Sedona, this minivan is cheaper compared to domestic and Japanese minivans, but the soon to be out Hyundai Entourage (the Sedona's twin) is more expensive than the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna and Nissan Quest. So here is what I think...in the near future, Hyundai will be in the likes of Lexus, Acura and Infiniti and Kia will be in the league with Toyota, Honda and Nissan.
dont worry, codename pa lang yun...sana hindi nila ituloy yun...
but seriously, hindi ba mas nightmare ang Hyundai as a luxury brand? i have nothing against Hyundai, i actually adore their new line up of cars...but going upscale will definitely put them into trouble... coz if they are escaping it, i think they are heading the wrong direction.
Kia is cheaper because they want it affordable here than Hyundai. Pero yung nga lang they stripped down the accessories and they sell only the lowest varian here. Like the Picanto. Wala namn lang SE+ na lumabas dito. Walang 60/40 split rear seats with head restraints. Walang rear wipers. Pero if they were to release it here. Konti lang ang bibili. But ang hindi nila alam may mga naghahanap din ng mga ibang variants or yung mga mataas na variats. Bakit hindi nila nilabas yung Opirus / amanti dito. Counterpart yan ng Accord,Camry. Pero mas mura yun. Not unlike Hyundai. Maraming mapagpipilian. But they will release the New Carnival, Sportage this month. And hopefully hindi stripped down. But Sabi ng mga Kia guys CRDi daw for both. And auto doors for Carnival. I'm eying on this down.![]()
Hyundai also reserves the newest engines for its own cars.
I think the new Sonata and new Kia Optima share the same platform. But, the new Kia Optima's top engine is a 185hp 2.7L V6 while the Hyundai Sonata has a 235hp 3.3L V6. Someday, the Kia may get the same 3.3L V6 of the Sonata. But by that time, the Sonata may have the 263hp 3.8L V6 of the Azera.
I doubt the Entourage will be that much. The Entourage starts out at $23k and tops off at $29k. The Honda Oddyssey starts at $25k and tops off at $39k. There's some overlap among lo and hi ends. But the Entourage is still less expensive.
Same goes for Toyota Sienna which starts at $22k and tops off at $38k. Ditto for the Nissan Quest which starts at $23k and tops off at $34k.
All prices MSRP and all with V6's....
it'll be hard trying to break out of the mold. Hyundiai, IMO, should market itself as the lower priced alternative to Japanese counterparts. Example....Tucson vs. Escape/CRV/Rav 4/Vitara. The Tuc is way cheaper, but it does not really give away much in terms of snob appeal. In other words, di na 'jologs' ang Hyundai because the designs now look as 'expensive' as comparable Japanese cars, and the quality is on the rise too.
But to jump up to a luxury brand? IMO, they should first establish their place as firm competition to the well known Japanese brands before even thinking of going up against Lexus/Acura etc.
Simple, KIA is just a subsidiary and Hyundai controls KIA.
Hyundai is a superindustrial company in Korea, With products like Computers, Eletronics, Ships (oil tankers and cruise ships, they are currently the No.1 Ship builder in the world with the fastest delivery time), heavy equipment, trucks and automobiles etc. (obvious bang Discovery Channel addict ako? haha)
To clear things up a bit:
Hyundai is marketing itself upmarket relative to Kia.
It is not yet going up against established luxury brands.

not yet coz they dont have the products yet...but, i believe the launch of the upcoming BS sedan will make Hyundai, a lower priced alternative to Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Benz, BMW and not Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Honda etc.
Yup. Kaya may 'yet'. hehehe. Abangan na lang natin.![]()

Kia is marketed to the 20-35 y.o. range kaya dapat sporty yet affordable ang binebenta nila...
Hyundai is targeted to the 30-45 y.o. segment kaya more goodies & luxuries ang binibigay nila coz people in this age bracket value comfort & convenience...
You can say that in a business perspective... since their cars share parts, mas maliit ang profit margin sa Kia than Hyundai... pero good formula ginagawa nila because they separate their target markets and when they sum things up.. high + small profit is still an above average business performance.
Kumbaga Kia entices you to try out Korean Cars based on the cost savings & sportiness... then Hyundai entices you deeper to Korean Cars by giving you more amenities...
Good strategy... Good business!![]()
it might work if Hyundai-Kia knows how to restrict their brands from creeping upscale. in the case of the Hyundai, the impending arrival of the BS sedan triggering for a wayyyy upmarket move to a Lexus category MAY be bad.
a Chrysler-Plymouth like tag team seems better for Hyundai than a Toyo-Lexus. ;)
