Just wondering how 4 x 4 vans would fair on actual offroad condition or if people actually drive these vehicles offroad.

the 4wd vans of Mitsu (delica) and starex has the same underchassis as that of the pajero, but sometimes they do not have 4low, maybe depending on the market they are released. so they are capable off roaders, only limitation maybe is that they have a tall body, not stable on off camber situations.

...it's design for slippery roads, wading through flood, and some mud....not for REAL off road with deep ruts and extreme inclines due to its high center of gravity...

The Starex 4x4 used to be available via gray market only. Almost all were sold with the up-level "Club" trim though a lesser "SVX" variant was available.

It uses a traditional on-demand 4wd system which works similarly to the one in the Strada and Montero Sport but differs in that it is push-button operated rather than lever operated (as in the Space Gear 4x4's). It also comes with LSD.

Suspension is via torsion bars up front and coil springs in the back. Tires are not very aggressive and smallish (215R15 if I recall right). You will need new wheels and a lift to fit tires more than one or two sizes larger. Lift kits for Delica Space Gears will work.

An old girlfriend of mine had one. A Club Millenium Edition with the 4d56TDi. It drives well enough. Not too different from a Pajero.
