Hyundai brings out the all-new 2012 Eon
Words by Niky Tamayo | Photos by Christopher Kho

Hyundai’s booth at the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) was impressive, with over a thousand square meters of space and a variety of models on display. Yet while most eyes were on the new Veloster, Hyundai gave the humble all-new 2012 Eon equal billing with it on the showroom floor. As well they should, this is an important car for the aggressive Korean brand.

Conceived for the Indian market, the Eon hatchback is built to compete head-to-head with the Suzuki/Maruti Alto. While it’s based on the i10 platform, it’s slimmer, more tightly-packaged, and equipped with a smaller 800 cc engine. Clever nip-and-tuck work cuts weight to an amazingly light 750 kilograms. That’s 175 kilograms less than the base i10. Despite this, the Eon doesn’t feel significantly smaller. While there’s less headroom and elbow-room, legroom is just as good, and cargo capacity is incredible. Hyundai claims 215 liters of cargo space under that diminutive hatch, more than any other mini-car except the i10. And it still manages to fit a full-sized spare tire well underneath that deep boot.....

With prices starting at P438,000, the Eon is likely to become a big seller for Hyundai in the months to come.

I wonder how the disabling was done. If electronic control lang like computer CPUs, hacking it may enable the disabled cylinder. I wish those in the know would chime in. I have been reading reviews that the gear stick vibrates too much.

The cylinder isn't there anymore. The block has been shortened and there are only three cylinders left. It would make no sense to still have the full four cylinders and block if you're not going to use them.

Vibration is not any worse than most three cylinders. And it's nowhere near as bad as in diesels, where the stick shakes enough to rattle.

Have no idea. I have a picture of the oil filter, but I don't know if the size is readable. It should be the same as the i10.

Some dealerships will let you get away with oil changes by kilometers rather than months. Depends on who you talk to.

Three month change intervals are not unusual. They're industry standard, in fact. It's only with newer-generation engines that you can go for the 6 month / 10,000 kilometer interval, but then you have to purchase more expensive synthetic oil.

It's worth staying with the casa for PMS until the engine is at least broken-in. Just to be sure. Afterwards, bahala na.

Mabenta na ba ang EON? I've seen showrooms displaying this unit, pero sa kalye, personally wala pa ako nakita.

And how's the FC for those na nakabili na?

Moderate slope, kaya in 2nd gear. For the ultra-steep ones, like say Tagaytay Highlands or the inner streets of Baguio, you might need some buwelo. But if you're fine going slow, the Eon's first gear tops out at a ridiculously low 35 km/h... which makes it incredible for climbing steep hills.

Our local dealer had two units brought in for mags test-fitting. They're offering a promo, with mags and DVD included. They sold both on the spot at the wheel shop.

It can take most slopes in second gear. For the really steep ones, you either need "buwelo" or to shift into first. First gear is very, very, very short. Up to 35 km/h only. That makes it perfect for climbing or descending steep hills. Tested this at our Makiling location, where the road is so steep I have to slot the Crosswind into 1st gear.

Areza Binan brought two units to the tire shop for test-fitting. Promo, with mags and DVD. Sold them right there at the shop. SAs didn't know anything about the cars, they were brand-new... sold them anyway.
