This week, we test drove ‘Hot Hatch’ from Hyundai. We had so much fun with 2019 Hyundai Veloster N. Is N good enough against Honda Civic Type-R and Golf GTi? If you haven’t you have to learn how to drive manual, because it is so much fun! With 2.0L turbo and 6 speed short throw shifter, it was a blast, let's meet the Veloster N.

im kinda surprised there only one thread on the veloster N and no has even posted a reply yet.

Inquired about it a week ago, the dealer said it takes about 4-6 months delivery. But for the performance to value ratio, it definitely beats the Civic Type R with Honda's exorbitant pricing in our local market.

It could be the only reasonably priced hot hatch in our country with Volkswagen PH sticking with china-made cars and no GTI currently being sold.

Apparently people aren’t interested in hot hatches anymore. Napapansin ko puro crossover, SUV at MPV ang pinaguusapan ngayon. It is quite sad actually.

    P 2,058,000 daw.

Reliability is the biggest question.... parts may be extremely difficult to find outside the dealer since very few people own a veloster N in the Philippines. Wala pa namang issues ata sa US ang veloster N. But since its a direct injection turbo engine, prepare for carbon deposit issues.

Yah. A little bit more expensive.. around 100k. But that may be negligible at this price range.

This might be a good alternative to the WRX if you want to be different and stand out more. Veloster N is more flashy and youthful in my opinion. Watched some reviews and revving the engine creates that popping sound from the exhaust. Definitely for the rich kids.

100k more for a FWD turbo compact? The WRX MT is priced at 1.93M and you can use that difference to put a Stage1 tune to bring the WRX output to 300hp/400Nm. Sadly, there is a 3-month waiting period for the WRX MT. There is no waiting period for the WRX CVT (priced at 2M).

The Veloster N is a cheaper alternative to the Golf GTi - both are FWD turbo compacts.

You could also say the same with the civic type R... 1M more for a FWD turbo compact? 😂

I've heard tuning isn't advisable with Subaru's engines because of the risk of having ringland failure. But any gasoline turbo DI is at risk anyway.

The Civic Type R begs to be different - it is one of the fastest FWD cars available in the market. It has proven itself, along with the other equally as capable Renault Megane RS Trophy.

If tuning is not advisable for Subaru engines, why would Subaru have variable tunes for their FA20 engine? The XT, WRX, and S4 use the same turbo engine but in different tunes. The BRZ and GT86 also use the same engine but with no turbocharger.

But all of those are factory tune. Tuning outside factory specs will create greater risk for ringland failure. Not sure if it applies with the 2.0 boxer. 2.5L STI yung notorious.

There are aftermarket ECU tunes that follow factory settings. You could bring up the XT output similar to the WRX, same way bringing the WRX output to S4. These are safe ECU tunes. However, bringing the output to higher levels may result to some unnecessary strain and potential failure. For the CVT-equipped FA20-powered cars, the 300hp/400Nm is a safe max tune due to the torque limit of the CVT tranny.

With the older EJ25 turbo engines (WRX STi, Legacy GT), there are a lot of aftermarket tunes that bring the output to around 400hp. Not sure though how it impacts reliability.

I'd still like to keep a car stock. I'm a proponent of stock cars especially in the engine department. Its easy to claim "safe" in aftermarket tuning but problems will come out sooner or later. There's a reason why engines are tuned that way from the factory. There are even some cases where even factory stock STIs blew its piston because of flawed piston materials and owners having tendencies to drive these things very hard.
