I own a pre-owned crv 03 a/t and lately i have been hearing a knocking sound in the hood (engine?) upon start up in the morning ( or when the engine is cold ). The noise persists for a couple of minutes but then disappears when the engine is warmed up na. Had it checked and repaired in Honda Cars Makati - they said the problem was the tensioner bearing and of course I had it replaced by them. But alas, the knocking noise is still there. Can someone please tell me what the problem might be? and a possible solution?

Thank you in advance for your help.

What type and specifications of fuel and motor oil do you use? Does the engine shake when you hear the knocking?

Could it be the engine mounts rattling around?

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

+1! Ganyan iyung isang sasakyan namin dati, maluwag na pala sa pagkaka-mount ang engine. When the engine is cold, it vibrates a lot more than when it is hot.

Piston slap sound is not normal i guess.
Specially kung malakas na sobra like dinig mo inside the car.
For sure if this sound continues the Camshaft will be damaged.
Specially if u use lower viscosity of Engine Oil.
Use 5W40 on your CRV bro.
    P2000+ sa CASA.
    Good for 6 months.

returned my crv to honda makati this morning. i hve let the leadman hear the noise. he said that 70% sure that its piston slap. he suggested that let the vehicle stay with them for a while. the takatak noise is really loud that you will hear it inside vehicle even when window is closed.

the noise lasted not more than a minute after the initial start-up .

bro, are you using 93 octane? does the knocking occur with 95 octane? this particular model specifies 95 octane gas.

also, as Onyl Ryan said, 5W-40 would be more suitable for your engine.

thanks for the replies. I use Petron Touring for my latest oil change, prior to that regular mineral oil. It cant be a loose engine support either otherwise Honda makati would have seen it when they worked on it last week. Its a "takatak noise" and its very audible. It starts when you start the engine in the morning or when you start it after around five hours of being parked. seems like the noise is from inside the engine.

hope you still have the patience to let me know what u think.

btw, can i ask a refund from the casa? because clearly what they sold me was not the answer to my problem

experts, do you think this could be related to oil thickness? or octane rating? AFAIK Petron Touring is 20W-50.

I am aware that the TS has discarded the possibility that it is the engine mounting/support that he's hearing when he mentioned the rattling sounds he hears when the engine is relatively much colder.

I just wanted to reiterate: mas malakas po nang di hamak ang pag-vibrate ng makinang malamig kesa sa makinang mainit.

My father got to take home several for-sale pre-owned cars in order to quickly find buyers, and we have owned several other vehicles. In my experience, engines vibrate more when they're cold than when they're hot, as evidenced by the vibration of the body of the vehicle -- the colder the engine, the more vibration you'll feel on the body.

That said, I am not discounting other factors that can be the reason for the "takatak" sound as the TS has mentioned.

    My 2 cents.

    jgriosa,
Is the sounds like tik-tik-tik on the valve cover?Try holding the Valve cover. You could feel the pressure there. If YES.Try checking/Repairing the VALVE-Rocker Arms.
You could change 8PCS or the whole 16PCS.
(not sure on total quantity of rocker arms on a GEN2)

    It looks like this #2 & #3
    Around P200 per/pc

Knocking Noise when engine is cold - CRV 2003 Pls. Help
