Actually there is a big difference in performance between the two engines. Vtec gives you the boost you need at higher rpms which is especially useful for quick overtaking during daily driving.
Aesthetic wise, there is also some distinctive differences like the body moulding found on front and rear bumpers of a '95 LXi can't be found anymore on the '98-'00 VTi models. The window trims of the a '95 Lxi are black like the ones found on an SiR while VTi's have chrome trims.
In a nutshell, the VTi would be a better buy if you are in the market for a good EK bodied civic.
