iVTEC on the GD bodied cars (first generation + facelift Jazz and "cockroach" City ) was only available on the 110 hp 1.5 liter engine.

iDSi was available only on the 1.3 liter engine. The new cars (GE chassis) have iVTEC 1.3s.

iVTEC is a single cam engine with VTEC implementation on the intake side only. This allows it to maintain similar fuel economy to the 1.3 at low rpms and loads (when the intake is restricted to one valve) and to have high power at higher rpms. The earlier 1.5 iVTECs had 110 hp. The facelifted versions (at least with the Jazz, don't know about the City) have a different radiator fan design, which actually helps them supposedly produce a little more power in the midrange.

The current GE Jazz and City have 120 hp from the 1.5 iVTEC.

The iDSi 1.3 doesn't rev as high as the 1.5 or the new 1.3. It uses dual spark plugs for a better burn at low rpms and low loads, so it can run much, much leaner. While this limits it to 85 hp (compared to the new 1.3 iVTEC's 100 hp), it gives it terrific economy. With CVT or manual, I've seen iDSi's hit well over 20 km/l when driven properly. On fuel economy runs, they can hit between 25-30 km/l... similar to the Suzuki Alto and Celerio, but with more seating space and trunk space.

The new GE cars have 100 hp iVTEC 1.3s. Fuel economy is decent with the manual, but the 5-speed automatics are just so-so.

Other changes from the old cars to the new are the new cars have cast iron lower intake manifolds mated to a plastic manifold. The old ones used plastic for both parts of the manifold. This change was likely done for better durability of the manifolds in case of a crash, since the intake side of the engine is in front.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
