1. Make sure your car doesn't have holes on the floor where water could get in. Not only is the resulting mess a pain to clean up, you run the risk of ruining some parts (e.g. rusting of seat rails). Also, as it would be good to have gotten an undercoat just before the rainy season.
2. Check the vehicles in front of you; estimate how high the water would go up against your car.
3. Choose the lowest gear appropriate and stick to it once you're in the water. Proceed at a steady pace, slow enough to avoid splashing water all throughout, but reasonably fast enough to get out of it as soon as possible. don't stop, don't change gears, if driving an M/T, foot off the clutch!
4. Give ample space between you and the car upfront; the last thing you need is having a car die in front of you leaving you no room to maneuver out of its way.
5. Ensure you have an adequate knowledge of the road in front of you. You wouldn't want to be surprised by a big hole.
6. If the vehicle in front of you managed to cross safely, follow its path.
7. When in doubt, don't.
8. After the deed, wash your vehicle as soon as possible, especially the underside.
