A bad ground can cause these problems. Remember, electricity always has to have a return path. If the grounds are good or clean, it creates tremendous resistance in the ignition path. So you're sending 25,000 volts down the ignition wire and restricting its return path. That creates a surge in the ignition coil and module that can burn it out. It's the same reason that worn plugs or bad wires can burn up an ignition system.
If you're having a mechanical problem, then I would suspect a bad camshaft gear, since your distributor connects directly to the camshaft. No matter how good the gear is on the new distributor, if it's running against a bad camshaft gear, it will grind up the new one and it jumps timing, so its useless you just keep changing the whole distributor for nothing. Mahal. Before changing you must inspect your camshaft gear to avoid costly repair.
Choice I would have made as well.
