Well, I own a 96 Civic Vti. I had the following parts replaced just recently:

    Front shock absorbers
    tie rod
    rack end
    bushings
    auxilliary fan

It wasn't cheap. In fact, it drilled a pretty deep hole in my pocket. But, in retrospect, the ride is much better now. Kung sabagay, it's the first major repair/replacement done on the car since it was bought in 96, so I guess its not that bad.

Nakakagulat lang initially since you expect Civics to be rock solid cars in terms of reliability. I guess its also a function of age.

    i own a 1996 civic VTi (mt)

    positive points
    - nice ride
    - Good OEM front speaker
    - suspension is softer/comfortable than most models/cars of its same age
    - driver site is good
    - aircon is superb (next to nissan's calsonic)
    - looks are good in all angles
    - parts are abundant be it replacement or original
    - very easy and cheap to modify/beautify

    negative points
    - takaw "hamon karera" lalo na kapag SIR look
    - run channel needs to be cleaned regularly particularly at the onset of rainy season or else the window will stuck-up
    - you have to be good in avoiding those potholes or else you will replace your suspension parts often
