Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) is confident that it can recapture the sub-compact sedan market with the new Honda City. HCPI declared the new City breed has undergone a product upgrade and not merely a "facelift."

This was according to HCPI officials during the pre-launch test drive for the media at the Punta Fuego resort in Batangas held Sept. 56.

The new Honda City 2005 is now proud of its exterior and other technical improvements – it appears to be ready in challenging the Toyota Vios for a rematch.

The dilemna of previous Honda City variants was mainly traced to its front and rear appearance. In the new Honda City, the new design of the headlights, bumpers and front grille have turned its fascia into a "lighter mode."

Honda Research & Development chief engineer Takashi Saito said they have transformed the new Honda City into a "sporty, smart sedan."

From the rear, there is the new set of tail lights that extend up to the trunk which give the City a wider, more beautiful and refreshing look. It is a big improvement from the previous City models’ tail lights that were narrower and dull looking. The clear white and red combination tail light design on the old City model was confusing, perhaps because it looked like the front part of the vehicle.

Moreover, the rear suspension of the City was also lowered by a few centimeters for a better looking stance.

"It now has a powerful nose, low profile and wider look," Saito said during the pre-launch test drive event. The new Honda City 1.5 VTEC and the 1.3 i-DSi 2005 variants will be formally launched on Monday, Sept. 19, at the Rockwell Tent in Makati City.

The 2005 Honda City is equipped with an advanced independent strut with lateral force canceling springs and stabilizer that is translated into a more solid yet nimble drive.

To highlight the strengths of the new Honda City 1.5 and 1.3-liter series, HCPI deputy for marketing Arnel Doria initiated a four-stage fun competition for a group of motoring journalists.

Stage 1 was about the new City’s functionality. This required the teams to stack 19 boxes with various sizes inside the City’s rear passenger seat and trunk. The cargo space of the 19 boxes totaled 735 liters. Properly positioning the boxes into the City’s 500-liter ULT (Utility, Long and Tall) space, will allow them to fit, even leaving enough space for the driver, front passenger and one rear passenger. Only Team 1 composed of Anjo Perez, Armin Amio and this writer, successfully fitted all the 19 boxes into the City’s ULT seating arrangement.

Stage 2 was about driveability. The four teams were required to drive through Tagaytay up to Punta Fuego, with a required average speed – ranging from 60 kph to 100 kph.

With the aid of the 7-speed CVT Steermatic transmission, we struggled to recover the time and speed we lost while in traffic congested areas and steep uphill climbs. The stiff sporty suspension was perfect for doing a 60 kph corner attack even on downhill situations to maintain precise driving.

Moreover, it was the i-DSi engine — although with only a displacement of 1300cc — that produced the required average speed with ease considering its maximum torque of 11.8 kg-m is at a low 2,800 rpm.

Stage 3 was about the new City’s being "captivating." Now using a their talents in photography, the four teams battled for the best photo of the City inside Punta Fuego. Team No. 4, composed of Mike Black, Chuck Kim and Winston Baltazar, showed their creativity by capturing the City by the light of sunset, which highlighted its charming new face.

Stage 4 was the "Save It Up" battle, an economy run. Team 1 won by registering a fuel consumption of 14.35 kilometers to a liter after driving 63 kilometers.

    Here's the pricing:

    1.3A MT 561k
    1.3S MT 601k
    1.3S CVT 641k
    1.5V MT abs airbags 681k
    1.5V CVT abs airbags 721k

The 1.3A is particularly crippled. Only available in white. No power door locks while the "old" 1.3A had them!
