Hello guys. i just have a question to you coz im just a noob..,

i recently bought a 2008 Honda Civic 1.8 S (automatic). heres my questions:

    1. ive noticed that sometimes whenever i switch on the ignition, there is a lag time for the gear to be switched from "park" position to either "reverse" or "drive". in short the engine needs to be warmed up before i can change gear. is this normal for automatic gears?

    2. i dont have plate number yet for my car. i only have a sales invoice dated 4/29/09 (date car was released to me). one time, an MMDA officer flagged me and demanded that i should have a some sort of permit from the LTO (no ticket or kutong was given after i promised that i will sort this out with my dealer). my SA said that she is not aware of this special LTO for me to travel using the still the still "unlicensed" vehicle. while im expecting my plate number to be released this week, im just confused and curious as to the real documents needed for the legality of me using the car.

    3. is pressing the button in the automatic gear always necessary whenever i changed gear? ive noticed that even if said button is not pressed, i can still change gear from D to N or R. gear will not change only if its from "park" to "drive" or "reverse" during the initial start-up.

    Thanks in advance.

    1. By "lag", how long is the delay? There's about a 0.5 sec delay when shifting gears. This is normal. You should be able to shift whether the engine is cold or hot. Are you stepping on the brakes when you shift out of "Park"?

    2. By law, you are only allowed one week or seven calendar days to operate the car without a license plate. Day 0 began on the date indicated on your Sales Invoice. Approach your sales agent to follow up your plates. Of course, there are less legal ways of circumventing this, but it's probably best not to go there.

    3. The shift lock is there to prevent inadvertent shifting to the wrong gear that could damage the engine or powertrain, or otherwise cause an accident. The shift lock will operate in the following flow:

    Going down:
    P
    -brake pedal + shiftlock
    R
    N
    D
    D3
    (shiftlock)
    L2
    (shiftlock)
    L1

    Going up:
    L1
    L2
    D3
    D
    N
    (shiftlock)
    R
    (shiftlock)
    P

    1. How long is the lag time? seconds, milliseconds?

    2. As long as you have the conduction sticker, it passed through the LTO? Conduction stickers are released by LTO, meaning vehicle can legally travel. You should have with you the DR released by the dealer always. Usually its seven days, and once it expires and you dont still have the plate, just photocopy it and sign it again with a date after the first date of expiration.

    3. No need to push the button if shifting gears. Why shift gear in motion if your in flat surface? Thats the purpose of AT. Shifting gears manually for AT is needed during uphill climb or overtaking fast cars. True! from P to D or R should be pushed.

Ako din noob. congratz car po ninyo.

1.Sa automatic it would be a good idea to warm a bit (as in 1 minute) before moving out of park from a cold start. Experience ko lang po pero City akin. Fan po pinaandar ko pagkatapos mag ignition. After 1 minute aircon na at R or D.

2.Makes sense kasi po ingat sila sa carnapper. Tama po sabi nila na dapat meron kayong conduction sticker (or photo copy nun)

    3. Stumped here. Pero kasi CVT akin. Dami daw problems (wala pa naman akin). Pero sa CVT (gearless as against geared AT) wala ganun. Kasi madali daw ito ma sira. Wag sana.

Good luck and nice ride again.

Why do you think this is necessary? Just drive off easily for the first few km.

An A/T will only warm up when you use it (any gears except P and N). Heat is generated from the friction of the fluid churning inside the torque converter as well as friction created from movements of clutch plates, gears, and bearings.
