(UPDATE) 6 dead in Cavite shootout
By Arnell Ozaeta, ABS-CBN Southern Tagalog | 06/22/2009 3:54 PM

LAGUNA - Six people were killed when a gunfight, prompted by a traffic-related argument, erupted at a public market in Imus, Cavite at about 9:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

Superintendent Ulysses Cruz, Imus police chief, identified the victims as Raul Bautista, 68 and his sons Richie Allen Bautista, 45, and Raulindo "Raffy" Bautista, as well as their driver Michael Salanguit, 41, all residents of Barangay Palico, Imus, Cavite.

Also killed were Sowaib Salie, 68 and his son Mahmod Sultan alias "Macky", both residents of Barangay Bayan Luma in Imus, Cavite.

Cruz said the Bautistas owned an ice plant at the public market, while Sultan operated a cellphone and DVD store.

Police reports said the Bautistas were unloading chunks of ice along the road near the Imus Public Market at about 9 p.m. when Salie and his son Sowaib, onboard a vehicle, honked their car's horn impatiently at the Bautistas.

Annoyed by the honking, Raul reportedly confronted Salie. Eyewitnesses said the argument heated up fast after the two parties threatened to kill each other.

At around 9:30 pm, the Bautistas and their driver returned to the public market armed with short firearms and started shooting at Sultan and Salie, who were also armed.

After a few minutes of the gunfight, the dead bodies of the Bautistas and the Sultans were seen strewn around the market. Salangui, meanwhile, was reported injured but died a few hours later while being treated at the Our Lady of Pillar Hospital for multiple gunshot wounds.

Authorities recovered 40 empty shells from a caliber 9mm, and a Beretta handgun (with serial number D77491) carrying a magazine loaded with 13 bullets. Police are investigating reports that the two families had a long-standing feud, which may have prompted the violent encounter.

The victims' families, meanwhile, could not be reached for comment.

    Matinding gun violence.

Pointless talaga.

That's six less stupid people in the world. If the remaining stupid people would do the same to each other the human gene pool will be better. To kill another person over the honking of a horn is just plain stupid.

PNP on alert vs backlash of Cavite road rage
    06/23/2009 | 04:02 PM

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police (PNP) has stepped up security in Imus, Cavite to prevent a possible backlash of Sunday night’s clash between two warring families that left six people dead.

PNP spokesman Senior Superintendent Leonardo Espina said they have put up checkpoints on all entry points in Imus to prevent allies of both families from trooping to the town for revenge.

"We are on alert for a backlash that would ensue as a result of the Sunday's clash. We are expecting that so we are prepared," he said.

The clash, which started from a petty traffic altercation, resulted to the deaths of Mahmod Sultan; Sowain Salib; Roy Bautista and his sons Ritchie and Raffy; and Michael Salanguit.

The incident occurred near the Imus Public Market at about 9 p.m., police reports said.

Espina said part of their ongoing investigation is to determine if the firearms used in the gun battle were legal, but nevertheless, law enforcers in the area have intensified their crackdown on loose firearms.

He also said they are checking information that the two families were business rivals, and that at present, there are attempts to mediate between them to prevent further escalation of the violence.

"Investigation is ongoing and proper security measures are now in place in the area," Espina said. - GMANews.TV

These guys make legitimate gun owners look bad. Tsk tsk tsk. Now expect another rash of 'anti-gun' sentiments to hit the streets.

    Kaunting OT lang.

Not to stereotype all Muslims. I remember before when we had a stall under the LRT stairs in Baclaran. We gave it up when my dad decided to downgrade our business. Naghanap kami then ng iba to sell the rights to. At ginawa niya iyun with almost all of the other Muslim traders literally behind his back. Of course nag back out iyung buyer at sinumbong sa amin noong tao namin iyung nangyari. Eventually, my dad sold the rights to the "leader" na rin much to my consternation. Katuwiran niya eh makikipag away ka ba sa siang lugar na hindi naman sa atin in the first place? Haha! Anyway, na-karma din ang mga kups na iyun kasi a year later eh giniba lahat ng stalls sa spot na iyun. May hangganan din pala ang "tapang" nila.
