In trouble again: Jaworski’s son wounded in buy-bust sting

MANILA, Philippines – More than a decade after his last brush with the law, the son of basketball legend and former senator Robert Jaworski is again in hot water after allegedly shooting it out with police operatives early Saturday morning in Makati City.

According to the Philippine Star, Ryan Joseph Jaworski is currently confined at the Makati Medical Center (MMC) after suffering a gunshot wound in the leg.

He was shot after he and his companions —Joselito Au and Ferdinand Parago— tried to flee police operatives posing as buyers for firearms.

The operatives were from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO)’s Regional Police Intelligence Operating Unit (RPIOU).

According to Makati City Police Station Investigation and Detective Management Branch (SIDMB)’s SPO2 Nilo Sadsad, the 40-year-old Jaworski became the subject of the buy-bust operation after he was suspected of engaging in the selling of firearms.

After sensing that he was the subject of a sting operation, Jaworski and his companions tried to flee on their vehicle while engaging the policemen in a brief car chase and shootout along Chino Roces Avenue and Pasay Road, Sadsad said.

Aside from Jaworski, police also managed to apprehend Au who is currently detained at the NCRPO. Parago, meanwhile, has escaped and is the subject of a manhunt.

Recovered from the trio’s vehicle were various firearms and ammunition.

The younger Jaworski has had several brushes with the law in the past. He was apprehended for possession of illegal drugs in 2000, indiscriminate discharge of firearms in 2002, and engaging in a shootout with the son of a wealthy Mandaluyong businessman in 2004 which also left him injured in the aftermath.
