2 Filipinos fined in HK for taking plane’s life vests

HONG KONG—Think twice about taking “souvenirs” from airplanes, especially on international flights.

A judge here Wednesday fined two Filipinos HK$2,000 (P10,700) each for taking with them life jackets from their Cathay Pacific flight from Dubai.

Tsuen Wan Principal Magistrate Andrew Ma imposed the fines on Edwin S. Antolin, 52, and Crisanto R. Ramos, 29, after they pleaded guilty to the charge of theft. The life jackets cost only HK$400 each.

“Do you know each other?” asked the judge, who got curious why the two would take life jackets from their flight. He apparently did not know that many Filipinos had a proclivity of taking with them “souvenirs” from hotels, airplanes and other places they visited.

Both Filipinos denied knowing each other. They were seated on different rows when they arrived here at around 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday for a connecting flight to Manila.

Ramos occupied Seat No. 35B while Antolin was in No. 47B, but they apparently had the same urge to take the life jackets under their seats.

Antolin put the jacket in his blue traveling bag, while Ramos hid his in a red shopping bag. They did not foresee that they would be arrested and charged in court for taking “souvenirs.”

When they got to the passenger terminal building of the Chek Lap Kok International Airport, their belongings had to go through an X-ray machine before they take their connecting flight.

Airport security officers later told investigators that they noticed “suspicious objects” in the Filipinos’ bags.

The passengers were searched and the life jackets were found. Ramos supposedly even wrapped his jacket with a blanket.

The security officers reported the incident to the police and Cathay Pacific staff members, who confirmed that the life jackets were missing.

During police interrogation, the Filipinos denied any wrongdoing but they later pleaded guilty upon the advice of lawyers after they were brought to court.

Hay naku! Ang titigas kasi ng mga ulo... Kung sa ibang flight nangyari ito,- kalaboso pa sila dahil safety ng ibang sasakay sa eroplano ang na-kompromiso sa ginawa nila....

I think its prominently indicated in the plane's safety cards that unauthorized taking or possession of the life jackets is punishable by fine or imprisonment. If I were the judge, I'd impose the max penalty and give them both a travel ban to HK for good measure.

pwede mong uwiin yan kapag nabayaran mo like yun mga sabon sa hotel at iba pang consumables na nabayaran mo na. ginagawa namin ito actually tapos pinamimigay namin hehehe the point is BAYAD naman namin eh. kasama na toothpaste at tissue bwahahahaha

but things like lifevests should be best left where they were. baka ikamatay pa ng iba yan dahil kinuha mo.

before.sa shanghai, bago kami umalis nag check muna yun clerk para tignan kung may inuwi kaming blankets at twalya, apparently, pag galing pinas daw yun guests alam na nila yun habit ng "souvenirs". pati spoon and forks. i must admit na mayroon akong isang annoying na auntie na sikat sa ganyan, needless to say hindi ko siya kinakausap at pinapansin for many reasons, isa na yun behaviour nya na ganun.

it may be "customary" before, but now. wag na. we have to mature na din.

on another note, ang mga koreano may mga habits din ha...iba nga lang hehehe so hindi lang tayo ang imperfect,in fact lahat ng nationality

    My thoughts:
    1. In HK, they are quite efficient when it comes to prosecuting petty crimes. You would be in front of the judge in less than 2 weeks. Here? I think the police will release you even if you are a known criminal.

    2. I don't really understand why somebody would take small sundries like soaps , tubes of toothpaste and slippers from the rooms. The soaps are small, the slippers are really meant for walking on carpet only. They are somewhat impractical for home use and just add to unnecessary clutter.

    3. I don't really know what these guys were thinking about when they get the life vest. For reselling? Also, they got some nerve pleading not guilty when they were caught red handed with evidence.

    4. Most people would only get in flight magazines, newspapers or the in flight safety instructions. The last one is normally used as a hand fan.

    bebenta nila sa PAL?

next time when I travel, 1st thing I will do is check if the Life Jacket assign to me is still there under the seat, baka wala na when needed, hehe

they are actually lucky, I think its a agreement of the lawyer with judge and since they are 1st offense only, or else what I know removing safety equipments, or tampering is a very serious offense and will be jailed.
