Carjacking Spree Hits QC; 12 Cars Stolen In 12 Days

Police have recorded at least 12 carjacking incidents in Quezon City for the first twelve days of the month, ABS-CBN reported Thursday.

The incidents occurred despite police going on heightened alert status for the May elections.

On Wednesday night, carjackers seized a model 1999 Toyota Prado along Katipunan Avenue. Driver Jeffrey Mendoza said he was driving along Katipunan Avenue when a Mitsubishi Outlander bumped him. He said several armed men got off the vehicle and ordered him out of the Prado. He said the gunmen commandeered the vehicle, leaving him behind.

Before the incident, car thieves also took a Honda Civic parked in front of a building along Congressional Avenue.

The Quezon City police's anti-carjacking unit has been alerted for the recovery of the two vehicles.

    Hi All!

Well, this is a trend that goes with every election.

    They need the money.

This is one good reason to invest in ARB front and rear bumpers, side rails and steps as armor to defend you from minor fender benders.

If you got slightly bumped, you wouldn't have to worry about damage to you.

    :regards:

Police don’t go after car thieves
    By Ramon Tulfo
    http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquire...ticle_id=60356

MANILA, Philippines -- Carjackings and car thefts are rampant because the police don’t do anything to stop them at the source.

There’s a place in Pampanga where stolen cars are taken before they are sold to ready buyers: Barangay Capalangan, Apalit.

Stolen cars are first submerged in the Apalit River to be hidden for a day or two. They are then pulled up by cranes at night and stripped of parts which are then sold to stores in the barangay.

Some of the spare parts end up at vehicle spare parts stores in Banaue, Quezon City.

My sources said that some members of the police Traffic Management Group (TMG) are protecting the car theft racket in Apalit.

Pampanga has replaced Cavite as the dumping ground of stolen cars. Cavite became notorious in the 1960s and ’70s because it was reportedly the haven of smugglers and car thieves.

The TMG, which is charged with making our national highways safe and going after car thieves, apparently is not doing its job.

The TMG doesn’t have to go anywhere to look for stolen vehicles. All it has to do is hire divers to scour for stolen vehicles in the depths of the Apalit River.

The TMG is not doing its job probably because the Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Oscar Calderon, has not cracked his whip on big-time criminals.

My sources in Camp Crame say Calderon hasn’t accomplished much in crime-fighting because of his “live and let live” style of management.

Calderon, a distant cousin of the President, leaves his subordinates to do as they please, according to my sources.

If “jueteng,” the illegal numbers game and a comparatively minor crime, could not be stopped during Calderon’s watch, much more so more difficult crimes like car theft, kidnapping for ransom, and drug trafficking.

Incidentally, Quezon City, home of the PNP national headquarters, is still the country’s “car theft capital.”
In short, carjackings and car thefts take place under the very nose of the PNP chief.

Last week in Kawit, Cavite , by the road side, I saw a stall selling parts (ie. headlights, bumpers, etc) that looked like it came from somebody's ride in the metro.

It is understandable if it were surplus parts. But these are from locally assembled vehicles.

I think such as store can be subjected to a search...
