MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – A teenage boy died in an accident involving a driver of the Binays in Manila Thursday morning.
The victim, identified as Joshua Danao, was crossing Osmeña Highway in Barangay San Andres with his father Rolando Jr. when they were hit by a black Mitsubishi Adventure (WSW 194), driven by Eduardo Hernandez Jr.
Rolando sustained injuries while Joshua died after being dragged at least 50 meters by the car.
Hernandez, who was with female passenger Chariz Cudiamat, reportedly attempted to escape but was followed by a taxi driver. He was eventually arrested in Makati.
The suspect claimed the traffic light was on green when he hit the victims.
Authorities learned that Hernandez and Cudiamat had just come from a party and were drunk at the time of the accident.
Joey Salgado, media relations officer of Vice President Jejomar Binay, confirmed that Hernandez used to be the vice president's driver and is now working for Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay.
Salgado said Hernandez was off-duty when the accident occurred.
Hernandez is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injuries. – reports from Noel Alamar, dzMM; and Francis Faulve, ABS-CBN News
