i read somewhere that sold cars formerly registered as diplomatic or government plates are being reissued with new private plates.

x2 on this. When a diplomat car is sold, its plates are converted to regular plates and what is issued are the latest plate series.

If the mismatch is a small discrepancy only (plate series to vehicle model/year), this can still happen as some LTO agencies may have older stocks on hand. For example, we once got a Starex with "XR*" plates when the Z series was already out. We requested Hyundai to replace it as we had specifically asked for the Z plates when we bought the unit. We also once bought a 2001 model Ford and the plate it had was a 1998 series (WEN).

But still, whenever i see a mismatched plate and vehicle, i am more cautious.

Yep. I think the LTO's term for this is "dropping."

Dropping as a term seems more often used for PUVs or other hire vehicles that are pulled out of service or franchise, then re-registered for private use. Former taxis are the most frequent example, but I don't think there's anything stopping government or diplomat vehicles from doing the same.

Kindly correct me if I'm wrong.

wala pa yan... dati nga 16 valve corolla yung 1989-1993 model naka W plate.

gen 1 crv naka Z plate.
